Increasing Holiday E-Commerce Sales…
As a partner in Pleth Networks, a leading e-commerce development firm, I have a lot of experience dealing with E-commerce on the web. I thought that I would put together this “lengthy now that I have finished it” blog entry on the topic of Increasing Sales this holiday season. Everyone is always looking for easy ways to increase their sales, especially this time of year. With Christmas shopping just around the corner it’s a well-known fact that everyone will be spending money like never before in the next 3 weeks. How is the best way to capture online sales during this 21 day timespan? Here are a few thoughts…
Offer Special Holiday Sales, Specials, or Closeouts
Everyone loves a good deal, even if they are only saving a few dollars it still incentive enough for them to buy from you. I know this from personal experience. My wife went shopping last year with a few of her friends from church, the went to Branson, Missouri and shopped the outlet’s. She came back with a holiday vase of some sort that is large in appearance. It typically is displayed next to our entertainment center in our living room. It’s a pretty enough article I guess, but did we really need another piece of holiday decoration? I found out later from her, after several attempts, that the vase cost $100. I get the feeling that it might have actually been a little bit over $100 when tax was added onto it. When I rolled my eyes after hearing the news her response to me was that it was on sale for half price. Thank goodness we got in on that deal, somewhere in America there is a dude sitting in his living room admiring a $200 vase just like mine… The point I am trying to make with all of this is that if a person has a large shopping list they are more likely to purchase gifts that are reduced in price or possibly tagged with the word “closeout” because they instinctively think that they are getting the “best possible deal”… By doing a special holiday promotion or closeout this is also a way to generate good cashflow at the end of the year to increase your inventory for the next season.
SEO and PPC (Pay Per Click) Campaigns
Hopefully your website is coming up in the search engines well for your targeted keywords, we try to stay on top of search engine optimization for our clients but occasionally when the search engines make changes to their algorithms we in turn have to adjust our clients sites accordingly which may sometimes result in a timeframe where their site doesn’t come up as high as it once did. It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on this but a lot of time it’s honestly the luck of the draw, there are some factors that will separate you from your competition. For instance, if your competitor has a website that has been online for 7 years and you have only been online for the past 2 months you aren’t going to pull up as high as your competitor. Age of Domain is just one of many factors that dictate your natural search engine ranking, I just threw it out there as a “for instance”.
If you aren’t a regular PPC, pay per click, user, this is probably the best time of year to consider making such a move. Pay Per Clicks are links that you pay for based on your keyword. These are offered through a variety of services out there, we recommend and manage PPC campaigns for our clients in both Google and the MSN/Yahoo networks. We have found that both of these networks for pay per clicks are effective to increase sales. My business partner Stephen is a web marketing guru, click here to request a proposal and ask him what suggestions he might have for your website this holiday season or click here to learn more about Pleth’s SEO and PPC Services.
Social and Viral Marketing
Another thing that I think will be pretty big this year is blogging, it’s already big, but I am referring to the impact it will have in increasing sales. There are already a lot of consumer blogs out there for people to research products, I would definitely do my best to get involved in any conversations I could run across when they related to products that I am selling. By getting involved I would post links to that product in my online catalog, if there is already a conversation going about prices and where to get the best deal for that product you might have to adjust your price accordingly to be competitive. A good way to search blogs for product reviews would be to use a service like Google’s all-new Blog Search, I have blogged about Google Blog Search recently here.
Another thing you might also want to consider would be adding a Blog of your own to the mix. There are many ways to promote your blog out there, I will get into that in another post, but by pushing your products on a blog it’s been proven to have a positive effect on sales. I liken blogging about products you are selling to having a customer walk into your “brick and mortar storefront” and inquire about a product, you just blog, or type your sales pitch is the only difference. If you are interested in getting your own blog to support your website in tandem on the web, click here to request a proposal and I will be happy to discuss your project with you.
Email Blasts and Newsletters
What better way to stay in touch with your customer base than through email newsletters. With all of our e-commerce solutions our software allows clients to create an account and opt-in for newsletters and email blasts from the site owner. So many times I see clients neglect this tool and it often makes me wonder why. These customers have already established an account with you, their information is retained in your system, they can order products from your store with just a few clicks as opposed to having to establish an account and enter all of their information on your competitors website. Convenience is huge. Plus, when marketing to past customers you already know that they have an interest in what you are selling because they have bought from you before. With this being the case I would venture to say that your return on investment for whatever marketing campaign you roll out would be exponentially better than if you were marketing to folks you don’t already have a relationship with.
At Pleth we manage newsletter campaigns for clients in a wide variety of industries ranging from Health Care to NASCAR, we have done it all. If you are interested in reaching a large number of potential customers this holiday season there might not be a better way to do it quickly than Email Blasts and Newsletters. If you are interested in researching the possibility of such a campaign, click here to request a proposal from Pleth Networks, to learn a little bit more visit our website: http://www.pleth.com/services=newsletter_campaigns.htm, we have a lot of good information here as well.
EBay, Froogle, and Amazon
When you go on a fishing trip you certainly want to go where the fish are biting or at least hanging out. Selling online is certainly no different. Before I go any further I want to state for the record that the websites I am about to promote are awesome but are not a replacement for having your own presence on the web, they are simply a way to supplement your traffic and give you greater exposure.
If you have an e-commerce website, I suggest including a feed to your online catalog to sites like Froogle. Froogle is owned and operated by Google and has been one of the most popular shopping sites on the web since it came onto the scene. It’s pretty easy once it’s setup, there is a little bit of work to get it all setup. Basically Froogle feeds from your website database. When a product is added to your website it’s automatically added to your Froogle Feed. I have incorporated this for clients before and it’s something I am familiar with, we can incorporate your website into Froogle for a small fee given the amount of exposure you will receive from being listed. (www.froogle.com).
Amazon and EBay are a little different than Froogle. These sites require setting up a sellers account. Both sites vary on their terms and how they work so I won’t go into that, I would suggest checking them out though, both of these websites sell a lot of products. (www.amazon.com, www.ebay.com).
If you are a little behind the curve and don’t have an e-commerce website, or maybe would like to have Pleth take a look at your existing website and assist you in achieving your goals for increased sales and visibility be sure to check out our e-commerce solutions section on pleth.com: http://www.pleth.com/services=e-commerce.htm. We can assist you with everything from design and layout of your site to setting up credit card processing, etc., we have relationships throughout the industry that have enabled us to become a leader in e-commerce website development.
Wishlists
All of our clients e-commerce solution allow customers the ability to create and add to a wishlist. This wishlist is stored in a database and can be called in by friends or family of the customer wishing to purchase a holiday gift for the customer. This isn’t anything new, wishlists have been around for a while but seldom are they promoted like I think that they should be. For instance, this year I have made out my wishlist on Amazon.com and sent it to my wife.
Helpful?
Hopefully this blog entry has been helpful, all of these are effective ways to increase sales that I have seen work well in the past for clients. Hopefully you will consider these suggestions to increase your holiday sales. Time is running out on making some of these preparations so don’t hesitate to contact us to discuss your holiday sales strategy… If you are in the industry I would also be interested to hear your comments, or add-on, to this blog post, register here to post your comments…
Polaroid Picture Plugin for LiveWriter…
I don’t want to go on and on about this particular plugin and give the impression that it’s the newest thing since sliced bread but it’s really pretty cool. It’s a plugin for LiveWriter, which if you aren’t already familiar with LiveWriter, it’s possibly the best software Microsoft has handed down in a while. I have blogged about LiveWriter a lot in the past and it’s what I am using right now…
This particular plugin allows you to add a cool retro looking Polaroid frame around your Blog pics. This is too cool if you post a lot of pics in your blog might be worth looking at. It was developed by Brett (http://brettmarl.spaces.live.com/default.aspx?partner=Live.Gallery&mkt=en-US). Here is a link to Windows Live Gallery where you can get this software. Pretty Neat Stuff! There are a lot of other cool plugins out there as well, just take a look for yourself, there are a lot of new additions every time i look. I think that LiveWriter is definitely next generation Content Management.
Web2.0: LinkedIn
As some of you might already know I have been experimenting with various components that make up Web2.0 just so I can be better informed of the changing landscape in which I make a living and consult my clients. One tool that I have been playing with is LinkedIn. I kind of like this tool. Over the course of the years I have managed to become somewhat of a recluse, always in front of my computer screen, but back in the day I used to be out in the public a lot more and have managed to make a lot of friends and great “network connections”. I have a process that I try to keep up with everyone’s birthdays, got this from my cousin dave, and I try to touch base w/ each person on their birthday, whether it be by telephone or email, I try to make a contact with them. This way, each year I am able to touch base with each of my 1000+ contacts. I know that sounds like a lot of folks but it really isn’t if you have been in business for a number of years, you can come into hundreds of talented contacts in a very short period of time.
Back to the task at hand, what is LinkedIn? LinkedIn is an online network of more than 16 million experienced professionals from around the world, representing 150 industries. When you join, you create a profile that summarizes your professional accomplishments. Your profile helps you find and be found by former colleagues, clients, and partners. You can add more connections by inviting trusted contacts to join LinkedIn and connect to you.
Your network consists of your connections, your connections’ connections, and the people they know, linking you to thousands of qualified professionals. Through your network you can:
- Find potential clients, service providers, subject experts, and partners who come recommended
- Be found for business opportunities
- Search for great jobs
- Discover inside connections that can help you land jobs and close deals
- Post and distribute job listings
- Find high-quality passive candidates
- Get introduced to other professionals through the people you know
- and I am sure there are a lot more applications…
LinkedIn is Free! You can signup on their website, LinkedIn: About LinkedIn, be sure to download their handy toolbar for Microsoft Outlook too, you can send invitations to your contacts automatically this way. It’s definitely a thumbs up in my book… Oh yeah, be sure to check out my profile: http://www.linkedin.com/in/cottonrohrscheib
Pleth Premium Email Data Backups
When we get requests for our premium email products from large corporations we often are asked about our Backup process. This is something that a lot of people don’t really think about so I thought that I would cover this on my blog to educate our existing clients as well as potential customers.
Our secure, offsite data backup system, custom built using Amazon.com’s Amazon Web Services, avoids the performance pitfalls of transportable media backups (e.g., tape, optical) without needing to rely on a local storage area network that would sacrifice the advantages of offsite data. It is also faster than traditional file-based backup systems because it is application aware and able to more efficiently determine which files and attributes need to be stored and which do not. This makes restoring data as fast as possible.
Every night, new emails and attachments on the mail storage servers are compressed and encrypted. These copies are then transmitted to Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3). The backup proceeds in parallel, with each mail server connecting directly to S3, backing up messages that have arrived since the previous night’s backup. Amazon’s S3 automatically distributes copies of backup data to multiple data centers, thus ensuring high availability of backup and restoration services.
How Long Do We Store Backups?
Another question we get from time to time is how long do we store backups of email. Backups are retained for 14 days; if a message was deleted from the system 13 days ago, but the email was present for the nightly backup 14 days ago, the message can be restored. This can be done via your control panel by the system administrator.
Individual folders or entire mailboxes can be restored to either the original mailbox or to an alternate mailbox. This allows greater flexibility for email administrators and email users in recovering an important email message.
What about Security for Backups?
Email integrity and access controls are a vital component when considering offsite backup storage. It must be ensured that message contents are intact and that only authorized parties can access messages stored in the backup system.
Protecting message contents from being viewed by unauthorized parties is accomplished via encryption with the AES-128 (Rijndael-128) algorithm. AES-128 encryption is recognized by the U.S. federal government as acceptable for government documents considered “Secret” level. As a further protection, each mailbox is assigned a unique, secret key used for the encryption of that mailbox’s data.
After the message has been encrypted, the well-known MD5 algorithm is used to generate a signature. When the message is accepted by the backup system, the MD5 process is again completed and the two signatures are compared. If the message has changed during its transport to the backup system, the system simultaneously starts a new transfer to get the data moved to the backup system and lets system engineers know about the event. In this way, message contents are assured to be stored unchanged.
Finally, to prevent the possibility of email address harvesting from the backup system, the IDs associated with the encrypted mail stores are long-digit random numbers. Only by using protected data at separate facilities can individual users be associated with a given backup email store. In combination with individual encryption keys, this creates a “silo” for each user’s email data, distinct and protected from other users’ information.

Don’t Overlook Your Email Solution…
With years end right around the corner a lot of businesses are looking at their internal operations and trying to evaluate where they are and where they have been while keeping a vision of where they want to be. We typically see a lot of requests for website redesigns around the first of the year from businesses that are unhappy with their current providers for whatever reason. I think that taking the time to evaluate your website presence is definitely a good idea, and trust me, we love to be overworked, but I wanted to bring something up that a lot of businesses overlook, Email.
Email has been around since the dawn of the internet and rapidly grew from a novelty to the central form of communication for many of today’s top businesses. Email comes in alot of different forms, first there are the free “personal” email accounts offered from Internet Giants like Google (GMail), Yahoo, Microsoft (Hotmail), etc. and there are also those “business” accounts that are usually associated with a corporate website domain. These are generally POP3 email accounts, sometimes IMAP, but no matter what type of email solution you have you know that your business’s growth and success relies more and more on it everyday. A lot of corporate email solutions come from Microsoft, hosted on the Exchange Server. These email solutions are sold based on a per license basis and can become quite costly for corporations or small businesses with a lot of accounts. Sadly, we get reports from corporate and smb clients that their current email solutions aren’t doing enough to counter-act spam and block viruses. For this very reason we researched and finally brought to market our own Premium Email Solution, Plethware, www.plethware.com. The Pleth Premium Email Solution offers one of the most comprehensive spam blocking solutions on the market and virus blocking is included.
Another thing that we hear a lot of complaints from potential customers is reliability. Their current email solution isn’t giving them the reliability they need, in fact downtime has become commonplace. With Plethware we boast one of the industries top uptime services, I have blogged about Email Uptime in the past, http://www.cottonrohrscheib.com/blog/?p=175.
If you are in the process of evaluating your company’s IT assets, please take a look at our Pleth Premium Email Solutions, we would love to discuss your needs with you and assist you in leveraging our email outsourcing solutions.
How to Upload Your Photos onto the Web
I was cruising through Webreference, one of my favorite websites out there, today and ran across an article on the topic of photo storage. I personally use Picasa for my own photo storage, you can view my picasa galleries without leaving my blog by just clicking on the photos link at the top of this page, it’s really cool. I have a few clients that are using Flickr to store their photos online, and I actually like Flickr a lot as well. I haven’t got a lot of experience with Photobucket or any of the other community tools out there but I can say that photo storage on the web is an awesome way to archive and share your photos. If you are interested in learning more check out this Link to How to Upload Your Photos onto the Web – WebReference.com.
2007 NASCAR Wrap-Up
I haven’t blogged a whole lot about NASCAR this year, been pretty busy with various projects we have had going on with Pleth but I wanted to be sure and get my two cents worth posted on here before the last race at Homestead.
Mark Martin and the Daytona 500
Probably the biggest disappointment for me came when Mark Martin lost the Daytona 500 by only inches to Kevin Harvick. I just knew that Mark had this one in the bag. While it was great to see Mark doing so well in a very competitive field of drivers it would have done me a lot of good to see him win the race because he is my favorite driver, not to mention a favorite client, be sure to visit his websites: markmartinmerchandise.com, markmartinfordmercury.com, markmartinchevy.com, and markmartinmuseum.com that we have developed and are hosting for him. I am looking forward to seeing Mark next year running a ride from DEI…
Robbie Gordon’s Canada Race
Now, onto other things, another disappointment for me came when Robbie Gordon got totally screwed out of the Canadian Road Race this year, NASCAR did him wrong, plainly put. I’m not a huge Robby Gordon fan, but I do like to watch him race and admit that he’s one of hte best road race ringers out there, i know that a lot of folks dislike Robby.
Montoya and Harvick
Another disappointment for me was seeing Juan Pablo and Kevin Harvick’s incident at Sonoma. I posted my opinion to RacingONE’s blog right after the incident and almost incited a riot. My comment was this:
“one of them was scared, and the other one was glad…”
I said this in relation to the fact that during the entire altercation Kevin Harvick was trying to get in Juan’s face to argue his point and really put up his dukes, the whole time he was wearing a helmet and his Hans device. If you watch the tape of the wreck, it wasn’t even Juan’s fault this time… (most of the time it is..)
Dale Jr’s move to Hendricks
I was a little disturbed that Teresa Earnhardt handled Dale Jr. the way she did but I was glad to see JR move on. He’s going to be with a dominant team next year and should be in the chase for sure and possibly clinch a championship with Hendrick’s equipment.
Gordon’s Growing Up?
One thing that I almost hate to admit to but during the course of this year I have held my position that Jeff Gordon is a weenie. Have always been from that school of thought, but watching these past weeks as Jimmie Johnson has managed to steal Jeff’s thunder I have realized that somewhere along the way Jeff isn’t as big of a crybaby as he used to be when it comes to getting beat. It might be a different story if it was another car that he didn’t own that was schooling him like Tony Stewart or something but I would like to think that he is growing up. For the first time next year I might actually look at Jeff Gordon and not think the same way…
Joe Gibb’s Racing to Toyota
I was a little shocked that Joe Gibbs Racing announced that they were moving to Toyota next year. I really like Smoke, Denny, and the crew over at JGR and I hope that they can work with other Toyota teams like Bill Davis and MIchael Waltrip and hopefully come up with the right chemistry to make it a go for Toyota next year.
Michael Waltrip Still a Champ!
It’s not a surprise that I am a fan of Michael Waltrip. I have liked Mikey since he got into the sport, he’s a pretty cool guy on the track and off. I know that this year they had some problems but Mikey has apparently kept his head up and is heading into next year to give it another shout. One thing that I really like about Mikey is that he understands the business big time, he’s a marketer, if you don’t believe that just watch his NAPA commercials. He’s taken Lemons and made Lemonade for his sponsors and I firmly believe that next year will be a different year for Michael Waltrip Racing.
The New Chase Format…
I also would like to take a second to applaud NASCAR on their changes this year involving the format of the Chase, it made it pretty interesting for all of us to watch. I don’t think that the year ended up quite the way they wanted with Jimmie’s lead being so high but what the heck we have had a lot of action this year.
The Car of Tommorow
The COT, car of tomorrow, has gotten a lot of press this year, I think that there is a lot we still don’t know about the car and it might be a while before we do. I know that all of the teams out there are adding the new “point hitch” simulation equipment to try to get a competitive edge going into Daytona for 2008 but I don’t know if it’s going to be that big of a factor, the bottom line as I see it is that they have to just keep on adding as much horsepower as possible to keep these cars fast.
A NASCAR Blog for Next Year?
Another thought I wanted to share on my blog was an idea that I have for next year. My partners and I own a domain name, www.nascarview.com, I have been giving it a lot of thought as to whether or not starting a community blog would be a cool thing to do. I know that there are a lot of fan sites out there like RacingONE.com, NASCAR.com, etc., but this might be a fun outlet for me so I am strongly considering it… My motivation for this comes partly from watching what Jayski has done w/ his site over the years, he is now linked up w/ ESPN and no telling’s what kind of cashflow that fun to manage website is generating these days… I always like to find ways to make money running my mouth about things I enjoy…
Anyway, I guess it’s football from now on because the last race is coming up this weekend! Go Colts!!!!!
Pretty Nasty Fall…
This video has been floating around the web for as long as I can remember, it’s definitely one of the hardest crashes I have ever seen that’s for sure. Just watch as this chick steps backwards into this hole in the floor. I wanted to be sure to have this on here since it’s a classic…
MotionBased TrailNetwork Digest
This is just too cool, I got my Garmin Forerunner 201 in today and after dinner Donna and I took a leisurely stroll around our neighborhood so I could test out this new gizmo. It was really cool and easy to setup right out of the box, it only took about 4 minutes to lock onto a satellite. We made one loop around our neighborhood which I had always been under the impression was just about 3/4 of a mile, it was actually shorter than that, about 6/10 of a mile. We just walked slowly around looking at all of the new construction that’s going on, I will work on pace, etc. later just wanted to get an idea how the gps worked. When I got home I signed up for my free account on MotionBased Trailnetwork (Garmin website) and plugged my GPS into my serial port and uploaded my data. It only took about 2 seconds to upload and whoolah, my information is located here: Link to MotionBased TrailNetwork Digest.
