Hosting the Next President?

Derek Vaughn who is the VP of Marketing for HostMySite.com and a speaker that I met at this past years HostingCon in Chicago, posted a pretty interesting post related to the Mike Huckabee campaign website.  I have had a little experience developing websites for political candidates and even a foreign government once and I can kind of relate to what he’s saying here, although not on this scale.

As many of you now know, I was recently appointed Vice President of Marketing at HostMySite.com. It’s always envigorating to join a new organization and observe the inner machinations of a class operation.

One of the more interesting and unusual things that I have been watching is the Official website of the Mike Huckabee Presidential campaign. The site is entitled, ‘Mike Huckabee for President’ and can be found at www.mikehuckabee.com.

It just so happens that a great developer client of HostMySite.com, GSL Solutions, specializes in political websites. GSL Solutions created the ‘Mike Huckabee for President’ website, and it is hosted at HostMySite.com.

The really interesting thing about the behind-the-scenes view of the website is the incredible amount of effort required to keep up with a site that has grown from almost zero traffic to an Alexa 10,000 site. This traffic increase has occured in just the last several weeks – as the campaign has heated up with all the Presidential Primary activity. Here is a graph of the Alexa traffic report for www.mikehuckabee.com

Inside the effort at HostMySite.com is a great communication network that observes the activities of the candidate – particularly television appearances such as ‘Larry King Live’ or a Presidential debate. The team also notes when major media outlets mention the site with a link, such as happened last week with the New York Times. Each of these media mentions is noted and the team briefed, in order to stand ready to scale up bandwidth or other server resources if needed. Thusfar, the site has been rock solid – and a crticial component to the Huckabee Presidential campaign.

Michael Gaines, President of GSL Solutions described the importance of the website, ”I spoke with the Governor after the debate about the website and he acknowledged how important the site has been to their ability to interact with supporters and sustain his campaign for President. The anticipation is that the growth of traffic and supporters will likely double leading up to the final primary votes. Our company has been working with HostMySite.com for the last 6 years and we have thoroughly enjoyed the relationship and support. This particular site and its momentum are unlike anything we’ve experienced. I know many of the HostMySite.com technical staff have been working hard to help keep this site up over the past few days.”

Needless to say, HostMySite.com realizes the importance of free and fair elections in a democracy – as well as the free distribution of the candidate’s views and opinions – in order to help voters choose the next President. It has been a priveledge to assist in that process with the ‘Mike Huckabee for President’ website.

So, remember that the next time you plan on hosting the website of a major Presidential candidate, you watch the major media outlets – and have your finger on the bandwith trigger!

Book Review: PHP & MySQL for Dummies

This is another book that I purchased a while back to help me get up to speed on PHP and MySQL development.  It’s a pretty straightforward book like a lot of the “for dummies” books are.  Needless to say that a lot of the info in the book is kind of basic but it can be a great refresher if you are looking for one.  I guess before you pick this book up though you would probably need to get one of the basic HTML books out there, otherwise a lot of this might be over your head.

January 2008 – Web Host Industry Review…

I just got this month’s print edition of the Web Host Industry Review and found that Pleth is listed on page 28.  Just a heads up in case you haven’t gotten a chance to check it out yet.  Here’s a snippet from www.whir.com that talks about this month’s special issue titled “WHIR’s first annual Hottest Hosts”.  It’s more or less a web hosting buyers guide, I thought that it was pretty cool that we were included.  If you don’t get WHIR’s print edition you can go to their website and request a subscription there, also they have their print edition available there as well, http://whirmagazine.texterity.com/whirmagazine/200801/?u1=texterity.

January 2008 – Hottest Hosts Buyer’s Guide
The January issue is the first of what we intend to be an annual exercise, the Hottest Hosts guide to Web hosting services. This particular directory is unique to the printed medium, and an interesting extension of the hosting directory ecosystem into a new format. We’ll be going to great lengths to put this issue in the hands of new users, particularly those who might be unfamiliar with theWHIR’s work.

My Thoughts on MySpace & Facebook

In my industry it’s my job to keep my ear to the ground to stay up on what’s going on in the web world.  For this reason I have been researching out the 2 most popular social networking sites out there today.  This post is just my take, or gripes more or less, about the two and what they bring to the table.  I am sure it’s going to probably offend some of my die-hard MySpacers and Facebookers that I have known for years but oh well, here goes…

I have an account on MySpace and Facebook both that I use to stay in touch w/ classmates and friends.  I honestly only get on both of these social networking sites on the weekends because I usually don’t have time during the week to “hang out” online and do whatever it is that you do on these sites, ha.  For the longest time I used to stay in contact w/ my friends by using standard email but it seems that a lot of my friends are not even checking their email anymore, instead they are relying on MySpace to communicate with everyone.

I guess I don’t understand this phenomenon because Email is such a big piece of today’s corporate puzzle but I am gradually getting my mind around it.  Most of my friends that I communicate with on MySpace simply don’t have jobs that require them to use standard Email to communicate, it’s literally easier, and more fun, for them to just login to MySpace to communicate.  I know that’s hard to understand but after talking with a few friends who are die-hard MySpace users I have came to this realization.  I have accepted this but have informed everyone that would normally try to contact me through one of the social networking sites instead of email that it may be a full week before I respond to them because I don’t login that often.  For the most part I think that this is cool, I have a link to my personal blog on my account pages and I shouldn’t be too hard to reach if they need something that’s important.

The big deal for me is that when I get an email message saying that someone has send me a “poke” or a “message” on one of these two sites, I have to leave my email and login to my account online to view the message and respond.  For me this is just way too redundant and time consuming.  Not meaning this in a bad way, or to dog the social networking generation that is out there but it’s just a little hard for me to get my mind around.

Out of the Two Social Networking sites that I have accounts with, Facebook and MySpace, I guess I would have to say that Facebook is probably my favorite.  It’s a little more organized in the way it’s organized.  If you have ever been on a high school kids MySpace page you will know exactly what I am talking about, loud colors, spread out layouts, and of course loud blarings of Nine Inch Nails or whoever else they have in their playlist.  It’s actually kind of funny sometimes to look at.  Also, you also can’t discount the value of having Missing Persons notifications sent to your account, ha.  Why in the world do people do that?

One thing that I like about Facebook that I am not real wild about MySpace is that on Facebook I have the ability to add my Feedburner RSS Feed from my Blog and I actually get a lot of comments on Facebook, I have heard rumors that MySpace was fixing to open up a way to do something similar but as of yet I haven’t been able to locate it yet.  Other than that I also like the way that Facebook has evolved, it’s a “clean” online community where you can hook up with old friends and even make new ones.

If you are a MySpacer or a Facebooker either one, you can click on my profile buttons located to the right of this post and add me to your friends list if you would like.

Audi R8 Superbowl Commercial

I don’t know if everyone understood the Audi R8 commercial during the superbowl, I guess you would have had to have seen the movie the Godfather beforehand to really get it but I have to say that it was my favorite of the group.  Not only am I an Audi fanatic but I also own two of them.  My fun car is the Audi TT Roadster and this past year I got my wife a Q7 SUV for her birthday.  They make some great stuff.  In case you missed the commercial, here it is..

Book Review: The Javascript Anthology

This is another one of my favorite Sitepoint books, it’s a great resource for learning some cool Javascript tips and tricks. It really helped me to pick up some tools that I still use quiet a bit today.  I recommend this book to anyone who is involved in building websites or managing them.

The JavaScript Anthology: 101 Essential Tips, Tricks & Hacks

Book Review: Designing without Tables

This is another great sitepoint book that I picked up to help me get up to speed with the use of CSS to format not only the text and navigation on a page but also the entire layout.  Being an old school designer this has been a challenge for me to grasp, I think that I have been making some progress in using CSS a whole lot more, I still don’t see it as being the “only” way to do site layouts, in fact, I use tables for my basic layouts and rely on CSS for pretty much everything else.  It’s a great read nontheless.

Project: Powersite Business Directory v1.0

Pleth, LLC | Web Site Design, Managed Hosting, Email Hosting, Email ServicesThis is a project that I have been working on for Chambers of Commerce’s and Associations that need an easy to use web-based content management solution for managing their membership database. There are a few examples of this solution online at:

  • Heber Springs Chamber of Commerce
  • Greers Ferry Lake & Little Red River Association

As you can see from these demos, most Chambers of Commerce’s and Associations will want to categorize their members by “categories” such as “automotive, banking, etc.”. This software allows for adding members on the fly with the addition of new categories as well that will populate the categories list page on the fly. This is a pretty useful application that has also proven to be pretty stable in it’s first few applications. One other convenient feature that this application has built in is that it automatically generates a Google map link to the businesses address.

To login and see an example admin area for this software, Click Here (username: demo / password: demo). Please feel free to go in and add a business name to this database to see how it works. Click here to see the sample output of the application that is available to the world.

Once you are inside the software it’s pretty self explanatory, just click on Add New under the Manage Business Directory.  If you have any questions about this software or would like to discuss adding a Powersite Business Directory Solution to your existing website, please feel free to contact us and we will be glad to discuss your project with you.

More Bill Dance Fishing Bloopers

This is a follow up to my last entry of Bill Dance Bloopers, I was looking for the one where he drowns the camera guy by knocking him off in the lake and also ran across this one where he ends up launching the boat and trailer at the same time, this guy is hilarious!

Bill Dance Fishing Bloopers

I grew up watching Bill Dance on the weekends with my dad.  Needless to say, Bill Dance isn’t the most graceful fisherman in the world and has had his share of mishaps on the water, here are a few that I ran across today on Break.com that I couldnt resist posting here.  There’s another one floating around somewhere on YouTube where he accidentally knocks one of his camera guys off into a lake that’s hilarious, I will try to find it and post it here also..
