Blogs -vs- Forums…

Pleth, LLC | Web Site Design, Managed Hosting, Email Hosting, Email ServicesToday my partners and I were doing a GoToMeeting for a large organization we just developed a forum solution for and the question came up about what is the difference in a forum and a blog.  We actually have had this question a few times in the past so I thought that I would post an entry here in an effort to try to clarify the difference between the two applications.

What are Forums - An Explanation

I can probably best summarize Forums as user generated content that is organized in categories, sometimes subcategories, topics, and threads.  Forums are usually pretty organized and easy to find content by search. Forums are generally managed by an Administrator and a group of moderators.  Forums are also usually populated by a higher number of subscribers or members than a blog.  Often times forums are called “communities” because that is usually how they are organized.  I will frequent a few forums on the web that are related to my industry to gather information about a particular topic or to ask a question.  Forums are usually “subscribed to” by email by members who login and respond to questions or opinions offered by other members, all in all it’s a collaborative effort by many users.  I have a few examples of Forums can be found here…

What are Blogs - An Explanation

While Blogs are usually maintained by either one person or a closely related group of people they usually lack the collaboration that is seen in forums.  Blogs exist today in just about every industry and have been coined as Social Networking and Web2.0 by industry insiders.  This blog that you are currently on is maintained by myself but I do have a few visitors that are registered users that will comment on posts that I make.  A lot of Blogs simply offer up opinion but some do provide useful factual information about products and services.  I try to incorporate a mixture of business, personal, and fun information in my blog.  With Social Networking and user generated content being popular buzzwords these days we have seen a lot of requests from our corporate clients to add blogs to their corporate websites.  I have a few Blog Examples posted here…

How to Get Started -

There are a ton of free Blogging Platforms available out there today, free meaning that these blogging platforms are usually supported by the provider placing advertisements on your blog.  The proceeds and editorial control of these placed advertisements usually go to the owners of the Blogging Platform and the Blog Owner using their service has little or no input as to what is shown on their site.  I have seen some horrific screenshots of Blogs with ads flashing that strongly contrast what the blog is about.  For example I recently ran across a Christian Blog that was hosted on one of the free Blogging Platforms that had a banner ad for “male enhancement products” on it.  While it was funny to look at, it was kind of sad knowing that the Christian Organization had no editorial control over the ads served on their blog that they have spent a lot of time and resources bringing to fruition.

Project: Powersite Real Estate CMS v1.0 Beta

Pleth, LLC | Web Site Design, Managed Hosting, Email Hosting, Email ServicesI have posted a number of posts previously about my PHP/MySQL based Real Estate Content Management Solution.  I know that there are a few other options on the market, even some of them free to the end user under the open source model but I found them to be lacking in some respects so I have been devoting a lot of time working on this solution, here are some of the past posts on my solution:

There are a few other clients in other regions that are beta-testing this solution, another developer that I work with has passed this solution onto them to test, these developers have given me some valuable input for the solution so I released a few copies to them to test out, I have gotten pretty good responses back from them and I have learned that this is the best way to beta-test software, not only do I get rapid bug reports from the end users filtered by the developers but I also get proposed solutions from the developers so it’s a win-win if you ask me…

I thought that I would post a new list of features here that are included in Powersite Real Estate CMS v1.0 beta.  Here’s what’s there already…

  • Total Content Management of the Website’s Content
  • Utilizes Headers & Footer Includes provided by a Web Developer
  • Home Page Featured Listings Management (up to 3 featured listings, more available by request)
  • Database driven Listings Database (supports co-listing agents, request information logic for email)
  • Listings link out to MLS Provider’s Datasheet for each listing…(this will only work if the client is also using Powersite MLS-IDX solutions.)
  • Google Map API, provides a link to each listing by connecting to Google Maps posting the address of the property listing
  • Listings Agents “About Us” page, allows for posting Agent Bios, Photos, etc.  Also, a link to view a particular agents listings has also been added.
  • There are also detail pages for each listing that supports up to 9 thumbnails, additional thumbnails can also be added upon request.
  • Ability to embed YouTube videos is also included in this software but is currently not being utilized by the clients I have testing it so it’s reliability can’t be reported, it has been tested by me a few times and seems to work great.
  • Additional content pages for area information have been added
  • A dynamic subdivision / development solution that allows the Real Estate Company the ability to post a page on their website with information about residential developments, communities, etc., in their listing region.  These section also allow the end user to upload photos that are thumbnailed and additional data such as a pdf printout or brochure
  • A trusted provider application that allows the client to upload information valuable to their clients such as Appraisers, Mortgage Companies, Home Inspectors, Local Lodging, etc.
  • The entire application is very search engine friendly in that it creates dynamic page titles and corresponding H1 tags for listings they enter into the system.

I am hoping that this solution will be launched in the very near future, when it’s live on the web I will post additional information about it here.  If you are a Real Estate Company and would like to discuss your web presence with us, please feel free to contact us, we would love the opportunity to work with you.

Sync Outlook with Pleth Premium Email

Pleth, LLC | Web Site Design, Managed Hosting, Email Hosting, Email ServicesI am currently beta-testing an exciting product that we hope to be able to roll out to our clients this year.  It’s a Synchronization tool that works with Pleth Premium Email Solutions Webmail Client (our web-based email client) and Microsoft’s popular Outlook Email Client.  This new tool will allow our customers to synchronize their Calendars, Tasks, Notes, and Contacts with their Web-Based Email Account.

Why is this such an exciting product for me?  I utilize Microsoft Outlook for my day to day operations, my calendar dates back for at least the last decade or so, and it also sync’s with my Palm Treo Smartphone.  I also use tasks inside of Microsoft Outlook to manage tasks that I have for client projects.  I also frequently take notes on my phone when I am in meetings, or even heading to the grocery store.  By adding the synchronization functionality with our webmail client, I can be in the Batesville office working from my laptop or in Vegas or Chicago in meetings and have the most recent calendar, tasks, and notes from my desktop or primary computer at my fingertips.  I can’t tell you how excited I am about this product.

This software will be beta tested for the next month or so by my partners and I to ensure that it’s ready to roll out to our clients and free of bugs. At this time it appears to be working great.I will be reporting back on this software closer to it’s release date.  I haven’t got any insight as to what we will charge for this software but I am guessing that it will be available as an add-on to our email service and could roll out as low as $1 – $2 per month per account, or at least that is our projected estimated cost.

LinkedIn: Relationships Matter

Someone pointed out to me this weekend that I had reached a milestone on LinkedIn and I didn’t even realize it.  LinkedIn is one of my favorite social relationship builders on the web today.  I hit 100 connections at some point this past week and had no idea.  I signed up for LinkedIn a little while back when someone sent me an invitation and it’s kind of grown from there.  I try to use LinkedIn to track new people that I meet that are in the development / hosting industry.  For instance, the bulk of my LinkedIn contacts I think that I met at conferences such as HostingCon, etc., it’s pretty cool to dig through and see what all common connections these contacts have with you.  Another thing that I really like about LinkedIn is that it also plugs into Outlook and synchronizes through Plaxo pretty seamlessly.

Here’s a description of what exactly LinkedIn in is that I grabbed from Wikipedia.org:

LinkedIn is a business-oriented networking site founded in December 2002 and launched in May 2003 (comparable to a social networking site), mainly used for professional networking. As of January 2008, it had more than 17 million registered users, spanning 150 industries and more than 400 economic regions (as classified by the service).

Jayden Eats a Lemon…

I shot this video tonight while we were all out to dinner after church.  I had picked up Jayden (Garth and Melisa’s boy) and was holding him.  Somehow he had grabbed my lemon off of my sweet tea and was eating on it, the look of surprise on his face is priceless.

Book Reviews: The Zen of CSS Design

My Business Partner Greg sent this book home with me a long time ago and I have had it with me every since.  It’s a good read, very nice book.  I have found myself getting into it again a lot lately as I continue to dive deeper in using CSS to do page layouts, etc.  There’s a lot of good info in here, especially if you are old school like me and was brought up using tables upon tables to do layouts, which is not altogether a bad thing.  The book was written by Jeffrey Zeldman, he’s one of the pioneers of CSS Design.

Sun Microsystem Buys MySQL For $1 Billion

I have to admit, I didn’t see this one coming, it looks like Sun Microsystems has purchased MySQL  AB, the company behind the development of the popular MySQL database software, for 1 billion dollars, wow…  As many of you know, while I respect Oracle, my choice for 99% of all projects that I develop is MySQL, I guess that’s just where my loyalties lie because that’s what I was brought up using but after having been exposed to MS SQL, PostGRE, and a few others, MySQL is still my out and out favorite Database.  Here’s a little bit more info on the buyout…

The spin from both camps was positive, but what does the deal mean for web developers? And what impact is it likely to have on other open source projects?

To attempt to answer these questions, we need to look at a number of factors, including Sun’s history with open source technologies, its competitors, and the success of other open source technologies that have been commercialized.

While it’s not without its detractors, there’s no denying that Sun has a pretty solid history when it comes to involvement in the open source world. The company claims to be the biggest contributor to the open source community, a claim that, based upon its release of the Solaris source code in 2005, and the Java programming language in 2006, is difficult to refute.

But there is other evidence of Sun understanding the value of keeping software open source and free: projects like OpenOffice.org and NetBeans have healthy communities and promising road maps. In fact, if you examine Sun’s current offerings to the corporate world, the only key component missing from the portfolio (and one that competitors such as Oracle, IBM, and Microsoft already offer) is a database. MySQL, with over 10 million installations worldwide (including high-traffic sites such as Google and Facebook) is a natural fit.

One concern that web developers may have is that the licensing terms will change — what if Sun decides to start charging a licensing fee for each of the installations of MySQL?

In my opinion, this just won’t happen, simply because Sun realizes that it hasn’t bought a database — it’s bought a community. A community of employees, developers, and clients.

Related to this is the question of whether development of the cross-platform releases of MySQL will stagnate, with Sun’s energy being focused on compatibility with the Solaris platform. Here’s what MySQL’s VP of Community Relations, Kaj Arnö, had to say on the matter:

“I don’t expect (the development of MySQL on Solaris) in any way to be at the cost of other popular operating systems (Linux, Windows, Mac OS/X, other Unixes etc.) or development environments (PHP, Ruby on Rails, Perl, Python, ODBC, C++, C#, VB etc.). MySQL grew with LAMP, and MySQL without LAMP at its core is simply unimaginable. It was MySQL’s part of LAMP that interested Sun in the first place. Hence I don’t see Sun having a platform migration strategy, but to continue to be an integral part of the dot in .com.”

In short, Sun understands the business model around open source software, and it wouldn’t have invested $1 billion into a company only to screw over its users for a short-term profit when the long-term prospects — driving MySQL into the corporate arena with paid support — look so bright. There are plenty of other open source databases (PostgreSQL, for example) with comparable features and performance that customers would quickly migrate to if they were unhappy.

And as for the figure paid by Sun? While some would suggest the number was low given the size of the MySQL user base, $1 billion is a lot of money in anyone’s eyes. Let’s take a look at some other recent open source acquisitions [source]:

  • US$210 million for SUSE Linux (Novell)
  • US$400 million for JBoss (Red Hat)
  • US$500 million for XenSource (Citrix)
  • US$350 million for Zimbra (Yahoo!)

I’d say the MySQL team would be feeling pretty happy with themselves right now. Who said there was no money in open source software?

Launched: Greers Ferry Real Estate Center

Last week I launched a project for a client (Greers Ferry Real Estate Center) that I am pretty excited about.  I am excited because the project is built on the Powersite Real Estate CMS that I wrote.  The website’s content is managed entirely by the staff and team at Greers Ferry Real Estate Center.  I hope to have a working demo of this software online soon for those of you that are interested in taking it on a test drive.  The software is written in PHP and is backed by a MySQL database.  Here’s a screenshot, if you haven’t already be sure to visit: Greers Ferry Real Estate Center online and check out their website…

Book Review: Run Your Own Webserver

My partner Stephen ordered us all a copy of this book shortly after we started Pleth.  It took me a while to finally get into it because my first thought was that it was going to be a light read but it really wasn’t, parts of it were filled with some really good info.  There is also a CD-Rom with the book that contains the Fedora build and also a handy wall chart.  if you are thinking about getting your won web server, this might be a good read for you, it sits on the bookshelf behind my desk to this day and I refer back to it from time to time.  I have even loaned it out to folks a few times.
