Tagging Plugins on Delicious

I have been doing a lot of WordPress development as of late and over the course of working on this variety of projects I have tried and tested a lot of the plugins that are listed on the plugin directory.  I do all of my testing on my sandbox WordPress Installation which resides on an obscure subdomain.

Most all of the plugins I have ran across work just fine but a few offer more flexibility than others.  Since there are so many of these plugins out there I have started tagging my plugins on Delicious along with notes about each plugin so when another developer asks me to share w/ them I will be able to easily access my library.  If anyone is interested in my favorite plugins feel free to check out my list, :powersitedesign’s wordpress-plugins Bookmarks on Delicious.  Also, feel free to connect to me on Delicious.

Thoughts on Economic Bailout

I typically blog about things I interact with on a daily business like software and web development. In fact, I have had a long standing rule with myself not to ever discuss my political opinions or perspectives in a public forum but given what’s been happening over the past week or so I am making an exception because I feel like venting some frustration…

A Few of Tonight’s Headlines

The Stock Market

I woke up Monday morning and sat glued in front of the markets all day long in hopes of picking up some bargains on stocks that I can hold long term.  For the first time in a long time I feel pretty comfortable with my portfolio’s long term forecast, however I wish I would have been better positioned to capitalize than I was, but that’s always the case.  I have watched the markets decline all week long until they finally rallied today slightly.

Even with the slight rally and lower oil prices, no educated person is going to deny that the economy is in worse shape than it has been since the great depression.  How did it get to this point?  I have some ideas but honestly I don’t think that any of us know for sure.  I think that it is likely not one particular company, person, or decision that we can blame, instead I think that there are some factors such as greed and bad decisions that have attributed over time to the point of where we are now.

Failing Financial Sector

I have watched these past few weeks as the Government has stepped in and propped up Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and we all know what happened with Bear Stearns. This past week I watched powerhouses Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch just go away for all practical purposes. These were household names and have been around longer than the automobile! They are no more…

Government Buyout / Support

Tonight, this is what prompted me to post this off-topic post on my blog, I watched a news conference where Treasury Secretary Paulson announced alongside political leaders from both sides of the aisle that there is a serious problem and the Government is going to go into session and discuss what their involvement needs to be in order to stabilize the economy.  It is rumored that there will be a huge influx of federal funding to some of these financial institutions in order to keep them above water.  Realizing that this is my hard earned tax dollars that these people who don’t even know me are getting ready to reward these corporations with for their bad management and greed, it really frustrated me.  I just don’t know if bailing these companies out is the right thing to do, I have heard arguments from both sides of the issue, it really kind of bothers me that irregardless I will have no say whatsoever we do or not!  It’s frustrating to me.

With all of this being said, I want to state for the record that I am a Christian and do my best to honor my government leaders and the institution of government that we have in the United States, I wouldn’t want to live in any other country. With that being said, I would advise everyone reading this blog post to take a good look around, watch the news, read the newspapers and blogs, and absorb everything you possibly can about what’s going on these days. Because there is a good possibility that we may never see this country’s economy or outlook this screwed up ever again! No matter how hard we try!

Sorry if you have a difference of opinion or perspective of what’s going on, I honestly don’t care to debate opinions with anyone, I just wanted to voice my frustrations. My prayer tonight, and every night, is that we will have the right leaders guided by the spirit to rise up and take control of this situation as soon as possible and problems that got us to where we are now will become evident over time so that we can remedy them in the future before history repeats itself again.

Homemade Bombs Found In Conway

I was just on KTHV’s website tonight checking out the news and saw where a homemade bomb was found in Conway. Police were called out to North Conway after neighbors heard an explosion near their homes that sounded like Dynamite.  Here’s the video from the KTHV website.

Governor Palin’s E-Mail Hack

See Added Notes Below:

There were two things that shocked me about Sarah Palin’s email account being hacked, the first was the obvious, that someone would do something so bold and absolutely crazy, ha.  The other thing that really shocked me was that the Governor of a state would actually have a Yahoo email account, ha.  This was the biggest shocker for me!

It is my understanding that this is was her personal account and not her official business or government email account.

I was showing to a friend yesterday how easy it is to locate these “brute force” password cracking applications on questionable websites and how easy they were to use to get into applications like email, etc.

Here’s an article that I found on Wired.com regarding the attack and some notes about the guy who hacked in:

A person claiming to be the hacker who obtained access to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s private Yahoo e-mail on Tuesday has posted a supposed first-person account of the hack, revealing the relatively simple steps he says he took to crack the private e-mail of the Republican vice-presidential candidate.

The story was briefly posted Wednesday to the 4chan forum where the hack first surfaced. Bloggers have connected the handle of the poster, “Rubico,” to an e-mail address, and tentatively identified the owner as a college student.

As detailed in the postings, the Palin hack didn’t require any real skill. Instead, the hacker simply reset Palin’s password using her birthdate, ZIP code and information about where she met her spouse — the security question on her Yahoo account, which was answered (Wasilla High) by a simple Google search.

The simplicity of the attack, of course, makes it no less illegal.

Added Notes: From The Register…

Updated Memo to law enforcement investigators tracking down who broke into Sarah Palin’s Yahoo email account: Gabriel Ramuglia might be a good place to start.

The 25-year-old webmaster and entrepreneur is the operator of Ctunnel.com, the browsing proxy service used by the group that hacked into the vice presidential candidate’s personal email account and exposed its contents to the world. While he has yet to examine his logs, he says there’s a good chance they will lead to those responsible, thanks to some carelessness on their part.

“Usually, this sort of thing would be hard to track down because it’s Yahoo email, and a lot of people use my service for that,” he told El Reg in a phone interview. “Since they were dumb enough to post a full screenshot that showed most of the [Ctunnel.com] URL, I should be able to find that in my log.”

Ramuglia got into the proxy business a few years ago, after schools began blocking access to an online game site he used to co-own. Pretty soon, people began using the proxy service to access YouTube, Gmail, MySpace, and dozens of other sites that are routinely blocked by IT departments.

To prevent abuse of the service – such as the occasional bomb threat or other illegal act that’s been known to happen – Ramuglia logs each user’s IP address, along with the time and web destination. That often isn’t enough to track down people who access extremely popular websites. But in this case, the perpetrators included a whole string of random-looking characters when posting screenshots of Palin’s hacked account. That will probably be enough for him to pinpoint the proverbial needle in the haystack.

The information at the moment is on a server at a Chicago colocation site owned by FDC Servers. Logs are automatically flushed after seven days, so the clock is ticking for law enforcement, who presumably are under intense pressure to protect the privacy of a candidate for the White House. Of course, there’s always the possibility that Ctunnel.com was only one of multiple anonymization services the email hackers used to cover their tracks, but there’s only one way to find out.

Ramuglia said if he is contacted by law enforcement officials he will probably give them the information they seek. At time of writing, he’s received no inquiries from any law enforcement agencies, he said.

The breach of Palin’s account “is pretty clearly against my terms of service,” he said. “As exciting as it is to be in the news, this is not the type of activity I can encourage by any means.”

Update

Within hours of this story posting, Ramuglia received a phone call from an FBI special agent from the Anchorage, Alaska, field office.

“He just wanted to make sure I wasn’t losing the logs,” Ramuglia said, referring to the special agent. The two are scheduled to speak again soon to coordinate the turning over the logged information.

What’s more, Wired.com has a story here detailing a now-removed post to the 4chan website in which a person claiming to the hacker who accessed Palin’s email “used only a single proxy service to hide his IP address.” Oops. ®

A Few Twitter Whales Tonight…

Twitter.comI was just in the process of loading a Twitter status script on my partner Stephen’s blog and Twitter started freaking out and I eventually got the Fail Whale.  Twitter has been running so smoothly lately that I had forgotten what the Whale looked like! A few of us early-adopters to Twitter became all too familiar w/ the graphic while Twitter was going through their growing pains. Here’s the note I found on the Twitter status blog describing the downtime:

Users are noticing a few over-capacity messages (whale image) while clicking around the web site.  We’re in the middle of a large optimization which has uncovered some bugs.  We’re working to address them now and thank you for your patience.

Mike’s Twitter Widget

Mike Muise has posted a pretty cool twitter widget on his blog today.  It basically replicates his twitter friends feed into his blogs sidebar which is kind of a cool application if you are looking for something like that here’s the code he has posted:

   1: <script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://r8ar.com/twitterati.js”>
   2:  {
   3: “user” : “powersitedesign”,
   4: “height” : “100%”,
   5: “width” : “100%”,
   6: “border” : “0px solid black”,
   7: “background” : “#C0C0C0″,
   8: “evenBackground” : “white”
   9:  }
  10: </script>

You can check out what the script does by visiting his blog and looking at the right-hand sidepanel just below his navigation and blogroll.

Practical Application for Twitter

My business partners and I have been trying to figure out the most practical applications for Twitter and how some of our clients can potentially leverage this popular social application.  Yesterday I had a scenario come to mind that I think may be very practical.

Let’s say you run a school campus and you need to setup some sort of campus wide notification system for the purpose of alerting your students of severe weather, hazardous chemical spill, or worst case scenario like we saw at Virginia Tech a while back.  The one thing that most all students are going to have these days is a cell phone.  Since Twitter can setup to communicate through SMS on cell phones, and there are tons and tons of other Twitter mobile applications available depending on phone manufacturer and operating systems.

With this being the case, I can see how it would be advantageous for the school or university to implement an emergency Twitter account and have each student and member of faculty simply follow the school’s account w/ their settings being checked to notify them on mobile in the event of an emergency.

I will probably post some more of these ideas for practical Twitter applications in everyday business from time to time as they come to me.

WordPress 2.7 Navigation Survey

There is a developers survey online for anyone that is interested in providing some input toward the next build.  They are asking for input on WordPress 2.7′s navigational options, see the notes below:

WordPress 2.7 is currently in development, and features a work-in-progress left-hand navigation column. This survey is intended to give WordPress users the ability to play a part in deciding how the navigation options should be grouped.

The menu function is based on sections with submenus, and you can collapse and expand menu sections without leaving your current screen. The image on the left below shows all menu sections collapsed, while the image on the right shows the Content section expanded.

In this survey we are primarily interested in what the top-level categories should be, what they should be called and which submenu items each should contain. We’ll show you a couple of different options and ask you which one you think is the best.

For those of you who have suggestions for labels, order, etc., you will have the option of providing specific feedback in these areas after you’ve chosen one of the primary options.

Quarkbase : Everything about a Website

I am pretty impressed by a link that my business partner Greg sent me this morning to a website called Quarkbase.

Quarkbase is a free tool that allows you to find out complete information about a website. It is a mashup of over 30 data sources and many algorithms gathering information from Internet on various topics like social popularity, traffic, associated people, etc. I tagged it in my delicious bookmarks this morning because I am pretty sure this will come in handy sometime.  One thing that I really like about Quarkbase is that it gives a pretty comprehensive social drilldown for each site as well, this is good information when it comes to evaluating where a potential client stands in terms of their online business.

Thoughts on Social Networks

Besides being a partner, co-founder, web developer, and consultant at Pleth Networks, LLC, I have also found myself trying on the hat of “social networking evangelist” as of late. I feel that it is my responsibility to absorb as much knowledge as I can about the “going trends” that are out there today in order to effectively serve our clients.

One of the trends that I have been monitoring for the better part of 2 years is the rise of social networking (ex. Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc.). This trend is unlike any other that I have witnessed in my 10 years in the industry. It’s not slowing down or giving birth to another popular explosion anytime soon either, it just keeps gaining momentum.

A few weeks ago I managed to get my partner Stephen to start using Twitter. He signed up for an account a while back but only recently started using it. He was extremely reluctant at first just like most of us who have been in this industry for a while, it’s new and we simply don’t understand it or really want to understand it, but once we actually do pick it up we run with it. We actually had a brainstorming session in Little Rock the other day w/ our partner Greg about some practical uses of Twitter integration for a few of our clients.

While Twitter has been a lot more reliable lately and gaining momentum and national attention through news networks like CNN‘s Rick Sanchez, Don Lemon, and Anderson Cooper who are now utilizing Twitter during their daily newscasts, the social network that I am keeping my eye on the closest is Facebook.

I feel like Facebook is best positioned to have the most impact on the future of the web in terms of ad revenues and overall traffic. I have watched Facebook grow to the point of almost being a web within the web. I personally devote 2 sessions of about 20 minutes each to checking my email and catching up with friends and business contacts. Over the past few months though I have witnessed some surprising growth from Facebook and have been seeing some pretty unreal numbers relating to it’s traffic and user base.

In order to position myself where I think I need to be in this crazy industry, I have been devoting a lot of time lately researching various forms of Facebook integration that can be utilized by my clients down the road when the need arises. I feel like Facebook is going to become a regular web development conversational piece with our prospective clients in the very near future. Currently I have two Facebook integration projects that I am working on, both are for non-profit organizations and I honestly think that both of them are going to benefit greatly from their presence on Facebook. As soon as I have something concrete to check out on either one of these projects I will post some notes here.
