Roov Facebook Connect Launched

I just wanted to give a shout out to my friend Chris and the good folks at Roov for launching their Facebook connect this past weekend.  It just seems like yesterday that I talked to Chris and this project was just in it’s very infant stages but the Roov team has really hit the ground running and already put together an impressive social network user base.

Here is the notification that went out this morning about their launch of the connect as well as a link to their blog where everything was launched during Catalyst:

We told you it was coming and now it’s here! ROOV.com has officially launched its integration with Facebook.com. Here’s what that means…

  • You don’t need another login for ROOV…just use your Facebook login.
  • You don’t need to upload a picture…we’ll bring your Facebook photo over for you.
  • No need to find your friends… again…we’ll bring those over from Facebook as well!
  • Notifications…yep, these will show up on Facebook too.

Like we said before…this is not an application. It’s actually something completely new. Basically, ROOV is now easier to use, and since most folks already use Facebook…we thought, “Hmmm…why not integrate?” Now you can continue to use Facebook like always, but at the same time stay up on your latest ROOV activity.

Not currently using Facebook? That’s okay… just go to Facebook.com, sign up for an account and then head back to ROOV to get going. And there’s more?!?! Yep.

Conversations

Just released the 1st of several improvements to come this month. It’s now easier to post quick updates about what you’re doing inside of ROOVs. (Don’t forget this will flow back to Facebook… so you don’t have to post in multiple places!)

Gatherings

Build community online and move it offline…that’s the purpose! The new release has really improved Gatherings. You can now suggest an idea for a Gathering and once enough people show interest, everyone can collectively plan it. Now you can create Gatherings that you know people want to attend.

Causes

Next time you go to ROOV you won’t see Causes, but don’t worry…that’s on purpose! Causes have been merged into ROOVs…and any Cause that you were a part of, you’ll now be a part of the new ROOV for it.

So… Go to ROOV.com right now and link up your account with your Facebook to get involved in the new and improved ROOV! Pushing out big changes like this can be a little tricky, and we may have a few hiccups

TulsaTechFest 2008

My wife and I had been planning on driving to Oklahoma City this weekend for my nieces birthday so when I caught wind on Twitter about TulsaTechFest I decided that I would head over and catch a few sessions this weekend while the women went shopping or whatever it is that they do when the guys head out.

I am also looking forward to hooking up w/ some developer friends that I haven’t seen in a while as well as a few new friends that I have hooked up w/ via Twitter.  The event agenda looks like there will be some pretty cool sessions on CSS, PHP, etc. I will probably blog about anything new and interesting I pick up while there…

Agenda: TulsaTechFest 2008

Hanging with Mark Martin

This past week was pretty cool, Monday morning I showed up early at the Conway Airport to pickup my business partner Stephen and one of our VIP clients, Mark Martin. Yep, that Mark Martin, who a day earlier was speeding 200 mph around the track at Kansas Motor Speedway in the Nextel Cup Series.  I knew for a few days that they were coming into town but we try to keep things like this under wraps for obvious reasons, the last thing we wanted to see was a bunch of NASCAR groupies show up with numbers painted on their chests.

We cruised all through town in Donna’s SUV, with Mark sitting in the backseat. Once we headed right down the middle of UCA’s busy campus and went totally undetected. Here’s the best part, we went to grab at bite to eat at Chilis, one of our busier restaurants in Conway.

We sat at a table located right at the front door. We talked over lunch and for a long time afterwards about his new airplane, an Eclipse 500, and not a person in the restaurant said a word or even recognized him. The manager did a double-take when we walked in but that was about it. It was hilarious, at one point he even walked outside to sit on the bench to take a phone call and we watched as people just breezed right past him, not a person hassled him the entire time.  I thought that was awesome!

For those of you who have wondered what he is like, I can tell you this from the times I have been around him, he is extremely down to Earth, and is a great guy to talk to. We mostly talked about his newest airplane, an Eclipse 500.  Once we finished with lunch I carried them back out to the airport and they headed back to Batesville.

Thoughts on Bailout

It is my sincere hope that this country’s economic crisis is solved with this new bailout plan that was signed into effect today, but honestly I don’t know that anyone in Washington has taken one step towards resolving the problems that got us here in the first place.

Here’s an analogy, let’s say you have a water leak, you put a bucket underneath it to catch the leak but in the bucket you find that there is a hole. At the end of the day have you really addressed the problem?

Today as I watched the markets close downward I couldn’t help but ask myself how much faith investors have in our entire process anymore.  I also quickly glanced over some of the additions or earmarks that were added onto the bailout and almost fell out of my chair.  in addition to the 700 billion dollar dollars of our tax money that is going to bail out wall street we also somehow managed to cut taxes on wooden arrows for children?  Oh, and by all means let’s be sure to cut import taxes on Rum and Wool imports while we are at it…

Sorry folks, I am a pretty intelligent dude but I can’t see how these things are anywhere remotely related.  What did I miss out on or is this a real life WTF?

This is too cool…

CSS Fix for #nav li & FeaturedContent Plugin

I have been using a lot of Brian Gardners themes for starter templates on my wordpress projects. In place of the tabber.php function I have been going with the FeaturedContent plugin because it seems to be a little smoother.  I have ran into some issues though with the drop down navigation on a lot of the Revolution Themes.

The drop downs will usually show up underneath the FeaturedContent Gallery on the home page.  I did some looking around last night and saw where Brian had posted a fix for this on the Revolution Support forum, it goes like this:

Locate your #nav li and #nav li li in your style.css file and change them to this:

   1: #nav li {
   2: float: left;
   3: margin: 0px;
   4: padding: 0px;
   5: z-index: 15;
   6: position: relative;
   7: }
   8:
   9: #nav li li {
  10: float: left;
  11: margin: 0px;
  12: padding: 0px;
  13: width: 150px;
  14: z-index: 10;
  15: position: relative;
  16: }

Note: This seems to do the trick.  This just basically adds the z-index and position to the CSS.  I also have tried this on the #subnav li and it also works there.
