Contrasting Churches in Tyler, Texas

Image7 Okay, my wife and I have some very dear friends who are planting a church in Tyler, Texas.  Their daughter was born on our wedding day so we have always had a natural connection to them, not to mention that Garth and I are very close and Melisa and Donna have been friends for years.  With that being said, when we heard that they were going to be leaving us (they were both on staff at The Church Alive) we were pretty upset.

I guess the Holy Spirit had already prepared my heart for the news before hand because I had mentioned to Donna a few days prior to receiving the news that something like this could eventually happen.  Well, once they met with us and shared their heart it only confirmed to me that this was God’s call for them to go and do this, but of course I still didn’t like it.

One thing I have learned from watching Garth and Melisa’s journey is that planting a church has it’s ups and downs, these two have been through a whole lot getting this church off the ground and still have a long road ahead of them.  Spending time w/ them this weekend I witnessed firsthand their determination and it inspired me, of course I would never tell them that.  I still keep some alarming statistics about Texas handy to blurt out at any given time just in hopes they will move back but I have accepted the fact that it’s all in vain.  I have devoted some research to this too, everything from Texas’ high ranking in repeat teen pregnancy, human trafficking, and methamphetamine production, they can’t be budged.  So, I am officially throwing in the towel…

Donna and I have already sewn into their ministry in the past by every means possible, prayer, finances, infrastructure, website and hosting, and even our talents (Donna sang this past week, I played Cowbell) and we will continue to do so as we are able.  It takes a special heart and endurance to do this whole church planting thing, and I can’t think of two more people better equipped to answer God’s call than Garth and Melisa.

If you live in the Tyler, Texas area, or know someone who does, please send them to the Summit Church website, and encourage them to connect with Garth and Melisa.  They also have a presence on Facebook and Twitter so be sure to connect with them there too, but most of all, please keep my friends in your prayers!

A Funny Story from the Weekend…

The next part of this story is yet even further proof that I can’t stay in your home for a few days without a funny a memorable story happening.  And what makes this story so funny is how straight-laced and ministry focused our friends are, this sort of thing doesn’t phase me, but the look of shock and surprise on their faces was priceless, and it came at a good time when we could all have used a good laugh…

This past weekend while we were visiting them in Tyler, Garth got an iPhone.  He and I were sitting around installing apps for managing his Facebook and Twitter, etc., and I was showing him one cool feature on Twitterfon that allows you to search recent tweets for those that are nearby (2.5 miles, 5 miles, etc.).

Well, in doing so I ran across a couple of tweets by folks who were professed Nudists.  Now, don’t get me wrong, I am not knocking the lifestyle, to each their own.  But obviously we are no nudists, nor do we know any (I guess we don’t, lol). Jokingly I told Garth that he should open up his vision for the Summit Church a little bit and try to include the large nudist population in the Tyler area.  Of course he just shrugged this off just like he has my countless “alarming statistics about Texas”.

screenshot-nudist-churchjWhile we were having lunch after their service Sunday morning I got on Twitter to show some of our friends the Tweets by local nudists to some of our friends down there.  Well, long story short, some of these tweets were about a nudist church located in Tyler…  Someone had beat us to the punch… haha.

I did a little investigating on Google and sure enough, there was a nudist church website out there for a Calvary Nudist Baptist Church!  (see the screenshot to the right, I am obviously not going to link to this website, although it didn’t have any offensive images other than their pastor being shirtless on the home page).

We got a huge laugh out of this the entire weekend, and I snickered for miles on our way home as I called some of our friends in Conway to let them know about this nudist church, there’s just something funny about naked people in a church, I am sorry, that’s just funny.

I also posted this twitpic of the website on Twitter and quite a few of my tweeps got a kick out of it as well.  Well, along about Hot Springs on our way back home I switched w/ my wife and let her drive.  I took advantage of the 3g service area and did a little research on this nudist church and found that it’s more than likely not a real church.  I have to admit that I was a little dissapointed but not shocked, the whole idea is a littel far-fetched.

The local media there in Tyler had numerous phone calls about this church and this is a recap of their report:

Oh well.  You have to give whoever set this website up a thumbs up on giving us all a good laugh.  The website is hosted on a subdomain of a company called “Nearly Free Speech” if that also gives some sort of a clue as to the websites origin…

Work From Home Scams Exploiting Twitter and Google

twitter-bird-google2 Since I have worked in this industry for a long time people often reach out to me with their web-related business ventures and ideas to more or less bounce them off of me.  One of the most common questions I get these days are related to the home based business scams using the name and even logos of Twitter and/or Google.

These things are scams as best that I can tell.  Especially in the case of Twitter, they haven’t figured out a profitable business model yet, so how are they going to pay you to sit at home and send out tweets??

Here is a little more information about these scams that was on MSNBC: (thanks to ShoeMoney for pointing out this article…)

Here’s something to tweet about: Con artists are now piggybacking on the popularity of Twitter and Google to pitch their phony work-at-home schemes.

Stealing the good name and familiar logo of these well-known companies is an easy way to grab attention and look legitimate to potential victims.

“They prey on people who are desperate,” says Ohio truck driver Robert Anderson, who fell for a home-based job opportunity that appeared to be from Google. “They make money by lying to people, promising them the world and giving them a guarantee they have no intention of honoring.”

The ads promise you can make thousands of dollars a week for very little work. Bogus blogs and fake testimonials back up these ridiculous income claims. And a deviously clever marketing trick makes these get rich quick offers appear to be risk-free.

“Unlike other work-at-home schemes that ask for lots of money up front, these Google and Twitter versions start with a small payment and then whittle away at your bank account,” warns Allison Southwick with the Council of Better Business Bureaus.

All they want is a couple of dollars — billed to your credit or debit card — to send you “free” information about their money-making machine. Armed with your account information they can charge you for services or products you didn’t order.

In retrospect, the offer was "obviously" a scam, says  Barbara Simonie of Henderson, Nev. She responded to a pop-up ad for the “Google Home Business Kit.”

Simonie agreed to pay $2.95 for the “free” information but never received it. She did find a recurring charge of $59.90 on her credit card statement from a company called Pacific WebWorks in Las Vegas. The company, which has a failing “F” rating with the BBB, also does business as “Easy Google Cash.”

Simonie called the company and was told the $59.50 was her monthly membership fee for the Google kit — a fee she never knowingly authorized. The customer service agent promised a refund. That was back in July. Simonie is still waiting for her $182 credit.

Pacific WebWorks CEO Ken Bell told me in an e-mail that his company’s Google offers “clearly explain the terms and conditions of the customer’s purchase before any purchase is made.”  As an example, Bell sent a pop-up ad in which the monthly charge is disclosed, but only for users who click on a tiny "Terms and Conditions" link at the bottom.

Google Money Tree

The Google Money Tree, recently shut down by a federal judge, operated in a similar manner. The online ads for this scheme were simple and direct. “Learn how to make $107,389 in six months just filling out forms and doing searches on Google and Yahoo," they said.

Karen Hobbs, a lawyer with the Federal Trade Commission, says hundreds of thousands of people fell for the pitch and had the $2 to $4 handling charge billed to their debit or credit cards.

“We have discovered no one who was able to use the information on the CD in order to make money,” Hobbs says.

But there’s a bigger problem. Those who took the bait and requested the CD were automatically enrolled in a membership program. If they did not cancel within seven days, and in many cases they did not even get their promised information in that time, they were charged a monthly fee of $72.71.  The FTC sued Infusion Media, the Utah-based company that ran Google Money Tree, and got its Web site shut down. A federal judge also froze the firm’s assets, which means if the FTC wins this case, victims could get some of their money back.

Twitter now the Hot “Opportunity”

The bad guys, always looking for something new, have added Twitter to their bogus money-making offers.  A recent e-mail picked up by the Better Business Bureau reads: “Twitter Workers Needed ASAP, You’re Hired! Make Extra Cash with Twitter."

The e-mail links to EasyTweetsProfits.com, a company located in Surrey, England. The Web site claims you can make $250 to $873 a day working at home. The company offers a seven-day free trial of its instructional CD for just $1.99.

That seven-day window starts the day you order the CD, not when you receive it. That important piece of information is disclosed in the lengthy terms and conditions page. If you don’t cancel in time, you’ll be charged $47 a month.

Walter Moline of Yakima, Wash., saw an ad on Facebook for Twitter Profit House of Glendale, Calif. Same pitch: $1.99 for a free informational CD. Moline paid with his debit card and waited for the CD to arrive. Seven days later, he noticed the company had charged him $99.

Moline says he missed the fine print about the seven-day cancellation period.  “I had no idea I was signing up for a membership,” Moline tells me. “I feel I was taken.”

Moline was lucky. He complained to the Better Business Bureau, which helped him get the money back.  The BBB of Los Angeles, which is handling the Twitter Profit House complaints, gives the company an “F” rating.”  I wanted to talk to someone from Twitter Profit House and Google Money Tree, but no one responded to my requests for a comment.

The Bottom Line

Work-at-home scams are everywhere. They’re advertised online, in print and on TV. They often make bold promises, have numerous testimonials, and may use the names and logos of trusted companies, including news organizations. It’s all marketing hype designed to get you to let down your guard.

How do you protect yourself? It’s really very simple. Never pay for a job or information about employment opportunities. And be skeptical.

Google spokesman Jason Morrison tells me the company does not send out e-mail, use pop-ups or have infomercials that offer ways to make money with Google.  “We do not pay people thousands of dollars to fill out forms or post links or click on things,” he warns.  “If you see something promises a huge reward with very little investment or work or knowledge required, be wary.”

I should also state for the record that I am not a fan of home based businesses, pyramid schemes, or multi-level marketing.  It’s just not my thing, it might be great for others, but for me personally, it’s not where it’s at.  It’s almost impossible to instill a complete vision in others for the growth of your company, sure you can train them and instill a lot into them, but when these companies cloud the “vision” with promises of getting rich by just recruiting people to be under you, I think a lot gets lost.

For more information on these scams, you can checkout the Better Business Bureau’s recent post or this one from the FTC.  If you don’t have an original idea of your own and want to pursue a home based business, I have no specific recommendations, but do your homework.  I am sure that you have someone in your contact database that participates in a few of these programs, lean on them to get their take on them as well.  I am probably not the guy to talk to.

Hope this helps…

25% Discount Code for H1N1 Flu Masks

flumasks We just had another death today in Arkansas as a result of the H1N1 Swine Flu, this time it was a 5 year old boy.  I also know for a fact that there have also been some reported cases inside the Conway school district this year as well in some of the younger classes.  One of our good friends was recently notified that there was a reported case in her daughters classroom.

I am not one to freak out or become alarmed by all of this but according to a recent post in the Seattle PI, we should all be concerned…  (– see post excerpt below.)  For those of you that might have considered purchasing masks for yourself, or your workplace, I wanted to share a pretty cool discount from one of our clients.

It seems like it was just a couple of months ago that the mere mention of the H1N1 flu (that was quickly spreading world-wide) evoked feelings of panic. There was widespread concern that this flu bug would become a severe problem, possibly rivaling the 1918 pandemic. Since then, it’s become apparent that most healthy people that contract the H1N1 virus experience a non life-threatening, self-limited illness; the effect has been to allow us all to breathe collective sigh of relief.

While it is true that most healthy people that come down with H1N1 are not going to be in grave danger, it seems to me that at least some young people have swung too far toward an attitude of complacency. This point was brought home to me by a brief interview of a returning UW student that I saw on the news last night. The gist of what this student said was that she was not really all that concerned about H1N1, and hadn’t taken any special precautions so far (I’m not sure what she we referring to here).

As just mentioned, healthy people usually do not suffer any life-threatening complications from H1N1, and I can see why many young people might not feel very threatened by it. It’s entirely understandable that a young, healthy person in their late teens or early twenties would not be overly concerned about the consequences of coming down with H1N1 in light of this. I get it. But there’s a larger picture here that some people appear to be forgetting.

For instance, suppose that this young woman on the news last night develops a mild cough in the next couple of days, and doesn’t get diagnosed with H1N1 until a day or so after that, when she is clearly sick. Now suppose that this same young woman’s roommate happens to have asthma (which may be entirely unknown to the woman in question) and catches H1N1 from her healthier roommate. What then?

I’ll tell you. This young woman’s roommate that has asthma faces the very real danger of a severe, life-threatening illness. She most certainly would be hospitalized, and might wind up in the ICU, or worse.

So if you are one of those young people that "isn’t worried" about coming down with H1N1 that’s OK as far as your own health goes. But please DO be concerned about those around you that might be exposed because of your lack of concern, and DO take precautions (such as hand washing/sanitizing, getting the vaccine). You just might wind up saving a friend’s life.

Admittedly, you probably won’t see me wearing one of these masks anytime soon.  Primarily because I work from home and don’t come into contact with a lot of people unless I am in church or meetings, but I promise you that if this thing breaks out into the pandemic levels that are predicted, I will definitely put one on before heading out…

Recent Projects: MOKSACVPR Redesign

My partners and I have been fortunate enough to call the Missouri-Kansas Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (MOKSACVPR) clients for about 5 years now.  Recently we were in discussion with the MOKSACVPR website committee regarding some updates to their membership registration system and recommended they also allow us to do a light redesign to their existing website.  They agreed and I drew this project…

I tried to style their redesign as closely to their existing website as much as possible but added some features and functionality that made the website a lot more user friendly.  I am still in the process of hammering out some tweaks to the design, etc., but here’s a screenshot of where I am so far…

Facebook Finally Profitable

For the first time since the social network Facebook launched, it is finally making money according to a recent article in the Los Angles Times.  Apparently the game plan all along had been for Facebook to be profitable by 2010 but with over 300 million users it was able to reach that mark earlier than expected.  For those of us that follow social media closely or are in the industry, this is a pretty big milestone.

I think it’s important to remember that other social media companies like Twitter are still looking for their business models and have yet figured out how to turn a profit.  Personally I think that it’s just a matter of time before Twitter finds it’s way and becomes profitable as well.  Something that a lot of people don’t realize is that these companies operate on angel investors until they can become profitable.  It’s a trend that didn’t exist a few years ago but as soon as some of these companies start turning profits and investors see dividends, I think there will be a lot more investors trying to get on board with these startups.

Whether you are a Facebook fan or not, you have to admit that this is a big deal for our industry!  The more investors trying to get on board, the more profitable our industry will become.

Facebook Inc., the world’s largest Internet social network, said Tuesday that it made more money than it spent, attaining a positive cash flow for the first time since it was started in a Harvard dorm room nearly six years ago.

The Palo Alto company also said it had increased to 300 million active users. The site reached 150 million users in only five years, a fast growth rate by any measure. But like sprinter Usain Bolt, Facebook atomized its own speed record this year by climbing to 300 million users from 150 million in a little over nine months.

Propelled by that growth, Facebook swung to positive cash flow ahead of schedule, it said. The company had originally expected to hit that milestone in 2010. "This is important to us because it sets Facebook up to be a strong independent service for the long term," Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a blog post.

Facebook, which has taken close to $600 million in financing, makes its money from advertising, including an auction system in which marketers can pay to target small products and services to certain demographics. The private company does not disclose its revenue.

Facebook has had a tumultuous childhood, frequently getting in hot water over the way it shares, stores and uses the personal information uploaded by its users. In August, the company announced it was starting a yearlong project to clarify and tighten its privacy controls after a Canadian government agency complained about the site’s policies. But Facebook’s rapid growth is perhaps the best evidence of its utility and its general appeal to users around the world. The company says its fastest-growing demographic is now people ages 35 and over, and in the U.S., the site’s nearly 90 million visitors made it the fourth most-trafficked Web property in July, according to Web ratings firm ComScore Inc.

The company, which now has close to 1,000 employees, was valued at $10 billion in a transaction this year in which Russian venture firm Digital Sky Technologies bought $200 million worth of Facebook’s stock.

New Worlds Record Brown Trout

I can remember when Rip Collins caught the first brown trout weighing over 40lbs on the Little Red River in Heber Springs a long time ago, it was a huge deal, and an even bigger fish.  Rip Collins has since passed away but replicas of his fish and the infamous photo of him holding it are still on display all over the Greers Ferry Lake area.  If you are interested, fishing guide Duane Hada has Rip Collin’s information on his site.. To the best of my knowledge no one has came close to topping his record until now.

I was watching CNN this morning and a headline caught my attention of a man in Michigan who caught a 41lb Brown Trout, I think that Rip’s fish was just slightly over 40lbs.  If that is true, that would make this catch a new worlds record.

Be a Lighthouse in Your Neighborhood

lighthouseThis afternoon my wife and I were just hanging out at the house.  I was in my office flipping between football games and I think she was watching a movie or something in the living room when the doorbell rang.  When we got to the door there was a black guy standing there, in his late 20′s / mid 30′s, he obviously had been in the rain for a little while because his clothes were wet.  He was wearing a clean shirt and a tie, his pants were pressed, etc., looking better than I do most days!  He wasn’t standing right in the doorway either, he was about 4 steps away from the door almost standing out in the rain.

He introduced himself as Roy to us and told us that he was working for a company, Freedom Sales, that took young people that come from rough pasts or disadvantaged homes and helped them to have a second chance in life.  He went on to tell us he was from Chicago, and that he used to be into drugs and that as of 4 years ago he had given his life to Christ. It was at that point that we shook hands or I gave him a high-five, I can’t remember. He went on to tell us that he was selling magazine subscriptions and also was being graded by the people that he met going door to door based on his appearance and his communication, he had a clipboard that he had us fill out.

He was extremely cordial the whole time.  We stood there talking for a few minutes before it dawned on me that he was somewhat timid and hadn’t really gotten very close to the doorway of the house.  I invited him inside, I am sure that this company probably trains them to not be all in your face when they are doing door to door sales, and that’s a good practice, but I immediately liked this dude, besides if it went south quick, I could take him.  It was at this time that I noticed a white SUV drive by the house really slow and a guy that I haven’t seen before gawking at us, so naturally I sort of gawked back but didn’t think anything about it.

As Roy sat there at the table and Donna was filling out her order for the magazine we got from him, both of us have a soft spot for people in Roy’s situation because we can both sympathize.  Well, as we were sitting in our formal dining room as he and I were talking and I noticed the white SUV drive by again really slowly.  I got to thinking that they might be with him so I asked if his supervisor was in a white SUV because he had mentioned that he was going to meeting up with his supervisor soon to go to another neighborhood.

He said that no, that wasn’t his supervisor, but that it was one of my neighbors. Apparently someone I haven’t met yet because I had never seen that SUV before.  Roy went on to tell me that he had called on that guy the night before but that instead of just telling him he wasn’t interested in buying his products or listening to his sales pitch, he instead went back into his house and got a shotgun!  He also called him the “N” word and told him to get lost.  Putting two and two together I figured out what was going on, this redneck was stalking Roy.

As Donna had finished up her order form she headed back into the kitchen and asked him if he was hungry, he told her that he had been working but was fixing to take a break for dinner and thanked her anyway.  Donna insisted on fixing him a Turkey sandwich, so he left here with a turkey sandwich. He might not know it but I kept my eye on him as he headed down the street.

Roy also doesn’t know that his courage today was a blessing to us.  As he left I strongly considered locating the driveway with the White SUV and letting them know what I thought, but I decided I would just let it alone.  I did however tell Roy that if he ran into this moron again to be sure to take off running back to our place and I would take care of the situation really quick!  The fact that that sort of thing goes on is mindboggling to me, and to know that there is possibly someone in my own neighborhood w/ racial bias like this is troubling. I figured if Roy was okay just to let it go and pray for the guy, then I would be too…

The reason I say Roy was a blessing to us was because what a lot of people don’t understand is that when a person is trying to get their life back together, it doesn’t take a lot to discourage them, and make them just give up. Knowing the fact that he was basically ran off the day before from this rednecks house with a shotgun, and clearly shaken up by the whole ordeal, he managed to have enough courage to get out again today and go door to door in the exact same neighborhood, and in the rain!  Not only that, but he knew this moron redneck was more or less stalking him the next day and he still went on with his head held high.

I can remember when the builders finally finished our house and we got moved in, we had all of our friends and family over for a huge house blessing party and cookout.  During that party our pastor spoke a prayer that “our house would be a lighthouse for our neighborhood that shows the way to those who are lost” and that has stuck with me all this time.

Well, hopefully today we were able to be a lighthouse for Roy, at the cost of a Turkey sandwich and a few minutes of our time.  Not a bad exchange if you think about it.  Knowing the neighbors I have on both sides of me, I can say that we aren’t alone either…  Be a lighthouse in your neighborhood!!!
