Rumors About Microsoft Opening .PST Data Format

pstformat If you follow the information technology industry very close you might have heard some rumblings that Microsoft plans on opening up their proprietary PST data format documentation to developers under the OSP, or Open Specification Promise.  The documentation they release will contain how data is stored, guidance for accessing the data, and how to navigate the folder hierarchy and how various objects are stored.

By allowing this data format to be made open, developers can now read, create and interoperate with data inside client or target .PST files.  This is absolutely huge in my opinion, and I know that I don’t often compliment Microsoft for doing good things, but this is one case where I am applauding them.  Microsoft Outlook, which utilizes the .PST data format is by far the industry leading business email client.  Personally I have been using Microsoft Outlook since I left the farm, my entire business history is contained in my .PST file, that’s past appointments, archives, contacts, tasks, etc.  It’s mind boggling to consider until you start looking at alternative solutions (and there really isn’t one on the market right now).

Regarding the move to open up the .PST Format here are some comments I found online at ARS Technica:

The company says that providing access to the documentation will facilitate interoperability by enabling customers and vendors to access their data in .PST files across a variety of platforms. Organizations that need to exchange key corporate data in and out of Outlook, upload to the cloud, or comply with corporate governance policies, will find this particularly useful.

On the one hand, this could improve Microsoft’s chances to make the .PST file format the unofficial standard in the area of e-mail data storage, while it’s equally possible that it could help Outlook and Exchange competitors make it easier for companies to switch away from Redmond’s products. Microsoft wants its message to be that this is a good move, as it will make the data more portable across various applications and platforms.

Rackspace recently published an interesting outlook on their blog too about the future:

Longer term, Outlook could become an apps platform where we see all sorts of third-party apps being developed that add value to the core feature-set of Microsoft Outlook, similar to what you see with Facebook Apps today but on your desktop.  However, in order for this to play out, Microsoft will need to do more than just open up the storage format.  They will have to also redesign Outlook with apps in mind so that apps can be easily developed and can feel like an integrated part of Outlook.  They’ll also need to launch some sort of an “app store” model for third parties to distribute their apps, such as what has worked so successfully for Apple’s iPhone apps.

I also found a little bit more official post on bink.nu regarding this announcement, while I am not for certain if this announcement came directly from Microsoft or not, it sounds promising:

Data portability has become an increasing need for our customers and partners as more information is stored and shared in digital formats. One scenario that has come up recently is how to further improve platform-independent access to email, calendar, contacts, and other data generated by Microsoft Outlook.

On desktops, this data is stored in Outlook Personal Folders, in a format called a .pst file. Developers can already access the data stored in the .pst file, using Messaging API (MAPI) and the Outlook Object Model—a rich set of connections to all of the data stored by Outlook and Exchange Server—but only if Outlook is installed on the desktop.

In order to facilitate interoperability and enable customers and vendors to access the data in .pst files on a variety of platforms, we will be releasing documentation for the .pst file format. This will allow developers to read, create, and interoperate with the data in .pst files in server and client scenarios using the programming language and platform of their choice. The technical documentation will detail how the data is stored, along with guidance for accessing that data from other software applications. It also will highlight the structure of the .pst file, provide details like how to navigate the folder hierarchy, and explain how to access the individual data objects and properties.

This documentation is still in its early stages and work is ongoing. We are engaging directly with industry experts and interested customers to gather feedback on the quality of the technical documentation to ensure that it is clear and useful. When it is complete, it will be released under our Open Specification Promise, which will allow anyone to implement the .pst file format on any platform and in any tool, without concerns about patents, and without the need to contact Microsoft in any way.

I guess we will just have to wait and see how this unfolds.  For me personally I will be setting up Google Alerts because I want to know the exact minute it happens.

Winter Doom 2010 – Frosty the Spiderman

We finally got enough snow in Conway to build a snowman today.  My next door neighbor Calvin Hill and I, (along w/ his kids and a few other folks that decided to stop by and pitch in) build without a doubt the coolest snowman in Central Arkansas today!  Meet Frosty the Spiderman…

The entire photo gallery from the day is already online at Picasa or you can view them here…  You can tell by Frosty’s hair that he still has a warm place in his heart for 80’s hair bands…

Road Trip Using Waze (Updated)

Okay, so this past weekend my wife and I went on a road trip to see Bill Engvall in Texas with some friends. I blogged before we headed out that I was going to use Waze the entire trip, you can read that post here… For the most part I was extremely, extremely impressed w/ Waze during this trip.  I did run into a few things that I wanted to mention though about the software.

Before I go into a lot of detail I want to reiterate again that for a free software app, Waze is probably the most impressive thing I have downloaded since owning my iPhone.  This whole Geo-Social thing is just getting fired up with apps like Gowalla, Foursquare, and Loopt on the market, and each one getting stronger, I think we are all going to witness some amazing things in 2010 related to Geo-Social applications.  Being that these apps are all new, it’s obvious that there are going to be some kinks, or bugs, here and there.  In addition to bugs, there are some items of functionality that we might also want right now that are just going to take the developers a little bit of time to put in place, I am a software guy, I totally get it.

Initially I noticed that Waze allowed users to check in using Foursquare but not Gowalla.  I would LOVE to see Gowalla added to the mix since it’s my primary Geo-Social app.  I am sure that it’s just a matter of time before Gowalla support is added, it’s growing in popularity every day…

Trips Over 200 Miles…

When programming in our trip, we learned that presently Waze will only accommodate for trips under 200 miles.  Since our trip was about 300 miles, we just picked a center location and programmed that in and hit the road.  I am not for sure if I expected the audible turn by turn directions from a free application but it was certainly nice.  I am not for certain but I think the voice on the app telling me which way to turn was a little bit easier to understand than the one on our Garmin.  My wife and I debated the voices a few minutes, we had gotten used to our directions girl on the Garmin.

Outside 3G Coverage Areas…

I could hear the audible directions being cued or downloaded to my phone before they actually spoke.  While we were in 3G areas it seemed that we got our turn by turn directions in a very timely manner, enough time to make our turns.  Outside the 3G central Arkansas area, near the Texas line was a little bit different story however, we almost missed a turn for our off ramp because the audio came in at the last second and I had to cross two lanes of traffic.

Recalculating Routes after Detours…

Once I got into Texas I programmed in our final destination.  As soon as our route was calculated I started driving.  About halfway into the metro Tyler area we missed a turn and it took a little while for it to recalculate our route, and this was in 3G service area.  I am not for sure if this was a fluke or not but I had to pull over and allow it a few minutes to get us back on track.  The other times that I ventured off the pre-determined route I noticed that the recalculation time lagged here as well.  I am sure that there is a lot involved with downloading, etc., but I bet that the folks at Waze improve this as time goes on.  As far as outside the 3G area goes, I am not for sure if there is anything they can do on their end as programmers to adjust for that…  and it’s understandable.

Reporting Traffic Jams and Speed Traps…

On more than one occasion we were able to locate speed traps before we happened upon them.  We also in turn posted speed traps that we encountered a long the way, 6 of them to be exact.  I really like this feature.  We also reported some slower traffic areas on our way back.

Directions Near Louisiana…

We decided on our way back to detour through Shreveport, LA to visit some friends and watch the Saints game and enjoy a bowl of Duck Gumbo.  As we got close to Shreveport we noticed that some of the turns the app was telling us to make simply weren’t there.  This happened a few times, I am not for sure why this was the case, it could have been that the interstate system there is stacked one on top of the other, about 4 high, and maybe it saw us on one of the other roads, but it sure made for some confusion.

Once we got onto flat roads and made our exit everything started functioning normally again.

Reporting Wildlife on the Highway…

On our return trip, we traveled back roads into Hope, AR.  On these back roads and even once we got on the Interstate we saw at least 100 deer grazing on the side of the road.  Now, anyone that has traveled Arkansas for any length of time knows that this can be extremely hazardous.  I think it would be cool if Waze added a section to their Report area that allowed you to report Wildlife hazards in the area so you could keep your eyes open.

In closing, I am still very impressed with this App and i hope to have Diann from Waze on The Cotton Club podcast one of these days very soon…

#LRTweetup, Meeting Jimmy Wayne & More…

lrtweetup2 My wife and I went to the Little Rock Tweetup tonight at Prost in the River Market.  This was my first #LRTweetup and it was an awesome social experience.  It was nice to put a face w/ the name avatar for a lot of the people I talk w/ on a daily basis.  I even got to meet the lovely @KerriJack tonight who my wife and I really enjoyed speaking with.

As we were meandering (a word I learned this past week) and talking w/ some of our friends I noticed a guy across the room that looked familiar.  I kept thinking to myself that I had seen this guy before and it wasn’t in the local circles.  Finally as he was walking across the room it popped in my head, this dude is a singer, Jimmy Wayne…  I knew that he was walking across the country to bring awareness to homeless teens in the nation, the project, http://meetmehalfway.jimmywayne.com/, is something that I was somewhat familiar with already.  As we got to talking my wife and I both realized at the same time that okay, here is this dude, extremely talented, career shooting to the moon, just released a new album, and he has walked all the way to Little Rock from Nashville to raise awareness to homeless teens.  Incredible.  What a guy, I am still a bit overwhelmed by it all…

For those of you not familiar w/ Jimmy Wayne’s music, here you go… (you can see some more of his tunes on YouTube.)

I even snapped a few pics on my iPhone for posterity of Jimmy and I and my good friend Keith Crawford because I am a total goober!  The lighting was a little dark inside so the pics turned out pretty dark.  I am happy to have met this guy, incredible dude…  You can follow his journey on Twitter at @jimmywayne.

Also, you can follow Jimmy’s travels by clicking here.  Here’s a little information about his project that I snagged from his website:

On January 1, 2010, Jimmy Wayne launched his “Meet Me Halfway” campaign when he begins his solo walk halfway across America in Nashville, TN.  Wayne’s intention is not only to raise awareness of the plight of the homeless, especially at risk children, teens and young adults, but also raise funds for organizations that benefit homeless youth, including HomeBase Youth Services, a Phoenix, AZ based organization that provides essentials for homeless young adults. Wayne will begin the walk at 10:00 a.m. CT on January 1st at Monroe Harding in Nashville, another organization that services at risk children and young adults. He plans to walk to Phoenix, AZ.   [read more]

Last, but certainly not least, if you want to make a donation to support what he is doing, you can do so at one of these links:

Update 10pm:

      I just

saw on Twitter

where Jimmy is camped out tonight in the parking lot at The Capital Hotel in Little Rock.  I offered up a room tonight, but judging by tour bus in the background, I probably sounded like a goober. LOL

Road Trip Using Waze

waze_logo I am going on a road trip this weekend w/ some friends to the bottom of the Earth (South Texas).  Normally I am not that big of a fan of road trips, I guess I outgrew that a few years back.  I guess for the most part I am just not that much fun anymore.  However, something about this trip has me a little excited.

As someone who sits behind a desk for the most part of everyday, I don’t do a lot of commuting, and the only time I travel is when I am heading to and from meetings.  There is a social application called Waze that I have been wanting to test out for a while now.

Waze is a free social mobile app that enables drivers to build and use live maps, real-time traffic updates and turn-by-turn navigation for an optimal commute. Waze is 100% powered by users and the more you drive the better it gets. I have played w/ the app a little bit just driving around town and have been able to report speed traps, backed up traffic, and even accidents just by having their app open.

I recently learned that Waze also acts as a turn by turn navigation system, I am looking forward to testing their service versus the GPS navigation system that we presently have.  I was talking w/ Keith Crawford last night on our podcast, The Social Radar, about the Waze app and he and I both agreed that they have probably one of the coolest applications going right now.  I look forward to reporting back how my weekend road trip went w/ Waze.

Now, here’s the only thing.  My wife complains that I spend too much time Twittering and all of that, I am sure that some of you have caught heat about this before too.  Well, I am going to have to try to use Waze covertly on this trip so that I am not accused of spending too much time on my iPhone.  It’s going to be tough, wish me luck…  If you want to know more about Waze, here’s a guided tour I pulled from their website.  (also, I have been in communication w/ Daniel from Waze about someone from their group being a guest on one of our upcoming podcasts, stay tuned)

Mile Wide Smile from Haiti

There hasn’t been a lot of video out of Haiti since the earthquake last week that could put a smile on your face, but this one might do just that.  This little boy was trapped under rubble for 7 days, I know that’s hard to imagine.  Watch his expression as they pull him up from the rubble.  Priceless… If you want to make a donation to help the people of Haiti, you can do so at www.redcross.org.

Current Projects: The Social Radar

My good friend Keith Crawford and I have been working on a sideline project / podcast for the past month or so called The Social Radar.  The Social Radar is a weekly podcast that Keith and I record to discuss the ever changing world of social media.  Some of the areas we cover include desktop and wireless applications used to manage social media (ie. Tweetdeck, Seesmic, Twhirl, etc.).

We also plan to cover new products that are released onto the market that are of a social nature.  It is our goal to update our show on a weekly basis with new information.  The Social Radar podcast will soon be available for download from iTunes, stay tuned for that announcement in the very near future…

The initial design for The Social Radar is extremely simple but expect it to evolve as we add new shows.  Below is a screenshot for The Social Radar in it’s current state:

Zebra + Donkey = Zonkey!

I was talking w/ my mom the other day and she was telling me that she had seen a Zonkey.  This didn’t register at first w/ me so I had to ask her to clarify what exactly a donkey was.  Apparently a Zonkey is a cross between a Zebra and a Donkey.  Okay…

The first thing that popped in my head was the mythical creature from Napoleon Dynamite called a Liger, which was a cross between a Lion and a Tiger.  I have actually heard rumors where that cross-breed had actually been done, haven’t actually seen one in person though.

Still not quite sure what this “Zonkey” creature would look like I had asked for some photo verification.  Fortunately today my cousin emailed those over to me.  I am not going to give out the exact geographical location as to where this animal is but will say that it is in Arkansas.  Here are the photos if you are interested…

Thoughts on Palin at Daytona 500 NASCAR Race

It takes a brave person to blog about anything remotely tied to politics, of course unless they are just too funny to pass up.  This one is just that.  I might have to reach out to my good friend and political blogger David Kinkade to see if he wants to head down to Daytona w/ me for the 500 and cover this thing from a political perspective.

It has been widely reported this past week that the former Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin plans to attend the Daytona 500 this year.  At first I got no fewer than a dozen emails and tweets w/ links to the stories making the announcement.  I think that this is going to be worth watching.  Do I think Palin has a chance at the presidency?  Um, no.  But, do I like Political Humor?  Yes.

For the most part, everyone in attendance at that race is there for one reason, NASCAR.  Not to say that I am smarter than your average Joe (no pun intended), but I can totally see what Palins handlers are trying to accomplish. They think that since the South is traditionally conservative, and this is probably the biggest event in the South, they can just parade her down here and all of the “rednecks” in Daytona will get their picture made with her and their votes are in the bag.  It’s a little insulting for those of us who can see how we are being viewed.

But, see what they don’t understand is this, picking a presidential candidate is the furthest thing on the minds of 90% of the people that are at the Daytona 500.  In fact, I would venture to say that half of them won’t remember she was even there the next day, unless of course she loses her top going down the giant slip and slide in the campgrounds area, but hey that would be a story for TMZ to cover!  Heck most of them won’t even remember the slip-n-slide thing if someone puts Dale Jr. in the wall.

I will say this though, good try Palin camp.  When Palin signed on w/ Fox the other day, that was more or less her trophy, time to move on.  While she might be an awesome cheerleader for the RNC (stop trying to picture her in a cheerleading outfit) she won’t be president.  This might have something to do with it…

But, hey if she’s going to be at the race I hope she has a good time.  I do hope that she realizes that one of the reasons the Daytona 500 is so popular is because that’s the one day that everyone at the race, or watching from home has completely blocked out what’s going on in the world today, healthcare reform, taxes, bailouts, wars, etc., nothing else matters!  So please don’t bring it up while you are there…

Feel free to parade her around though, heck even try to start you up one of those mini tea party / campaign rally things, there are people who will attend I am sure.  After all, they still make Velcro shoes for those that never learned to tie the other kind.  But eventually you are going to have to let your girl go and find yourself another candidate that can be taken seriously.  Please.

I don’t know who is pulling all of the strings in the Palin camp and leading her around the country, heck she’s been here in the south more lately than she has Alaska, but if they want to get a head start and make things interested during the next election, they need to check out this dude…  Granted, you are not going to agree with any candidate 100% of the time, but when trying to pick one from the group, people usually eliminate the dingbat first.  Oh, and before you comment to call me a Liberal, just know this, I consider myself a conservative and think the world of Mike Huckabee as a person and a politician, just can’t get behind Palin.

Some Predictions for the 2010 NASCAR Season

daytona500logo2010 With the Daytona 500 just a few more weeks away I thought I would go ahead and make some predictions for the 2010 season.  While last year was an awesome season, and it was great seeing my favorite driver Mark Martin do so well, I really think that this year has to be different for a few reasons…  By different, I am not implying that anything needs to change in terms of the format, or the venues, or even the cars, I just think that this year someone besides Jimmie Johnson needs to dominate, and there probably needs to be a lot more on and off the track bump drafting between the drivers.

When I say on and off the track bump drafting, I mean that the drivers need to all feel free to conduct themselves like the drivers in the 70’s and 80’s did.  I look at the current NASCAR driver roster and out of the 50-60 drivers that I have followed for a while, a lot of them just don’t have any personalities to them in comparison to some of the old timers like Ricky Rudd, or Junior Johnson.  The point I am trying to make is this, who would you rather see coming back out onto the track after Montoya put them into the wall, David Reutiman or Buddy Baker?  I think you can see where I am going.

Granted, I love the sport itself, just watching the teams tweak their equipment to win a race by outperforming their competition with something as simple as an air pressure adjustment really does appeal to me, always has.  But the races you remember are the ones where one driver throws his helmet at another driver on the caution lap.  That’s what I am hoping to see a lot more of this year.

Now, on to my predictions for 2010…

  1. Mark Martin will win the Daytona 500.
  2. Sam Hornish will continue to wreck each week.
  3. Juan Pablo Montoya will morph from a turd into a butterfly. He will also get along with the other drivers a lot better and I think that he has picked up enough experience in NASCAR and this might be his breakout year.
  4. Danica Patrick will make some awesome television commercials, and probably cook a mean pot roast, but she will not win a race in either of the two major series (she might pull off an ARCA race, or finish in the top 10 but I suspect it’s more about merchandising w/ her than anything else.)
  5. Hendrick Motorsports will continue to lead the pack this year but I suspect that Roush and Ford will close the gap a bit as will Penske and Dodge.
  6. Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman will only continue to get better and better.  I have called the Stewart / Newman thing a dream team since day one.  If Mark Martin doesn’t stand on the stage at the end of the year holding the trophy, I hope it’s Ryan or Tony.
  7. I think Dale Earnhardt Jr. will continue to sell an asinine amount of die-cast cars and t-shirts, but I don’t think he will be very visible in his teammates rear view mirrors again this year.  Something is just not right with Team Junior and it hasn’t been for a while.  Until he gets his mojo back they need to milk the t-shirt and decal sales while they last.
  8. Marcos Ambrose will continue to be awesome and by the end of the season his grass root following will rival that of Ken Shraders people. (Ken Shrader has more fans than you can imagine).
  9. Kevin Harvick will move on or do his own thing after this season.
  10. Jamie McMurray will try a few new hairstyles this year but won’t come up with anything he really likes.
  11. I think the Roush guys will either work together a lot better this year or it will fall apart big time between Edwards and Kenseth or Biffle.  Either way, I see Roush stepping in and making some changes if they aren’t contenders from the start.
  12. Kyle Busch will have beer cans thrown at him on more than one occasion this year.
  13. Based on the success that he had with having his ears trimmed back a few years ago, Kurt Busch will further explore some more cosmetic surgeries.  Possibly getting lips like Angelina Jolie.
  14. David Ragan will win a race or two this season, or come very close.
  15. Joey Logano will mature a lot more this season and I look for Hamlin to be a big part of that.
  16. Finally, last but not least.  I think that there is a good possibility that after a long grueling race at one of the super speedways, Tony Stewart will lose all control and eat that keselowski kid.  It will all happen during the post race interviews, and while Stewart is able to devour the boy rapidly, the first televised accidental act of cannibalism will be frowned upon by sponsors and it willl be a serious setback for ABC and they will be forced to let FOX cover the entire season.  This chain of events will make NASCAR fans around the world immediately forgive Tony Stewart and look at him now as a hero…

There you have it folks, let’s watch this season and see how close I am.  I would love to hear your predictions for the upcoming season as well.  Shoot me a comment and let me know what you think.
