Do You Use Project Management?

I had someone ask me on Facebook and another on Twitter this weekend, which project management software I recommended.  I immediately said Basecamp. Although recently, we switched to ActiveCollab at Pleth for managing our open projects because it integrated w/ QuickBooks a lot easier than Basecamp. For a company like ours w/ offices in 3 cities and hundreds of clients out there, we need everything to connect and work well together…

I am interested in hearing what everyone else is using for project management. Also, if you have an interest in discussing any of the other project management solutions on the market today in an upcoming episode of The Cotton Club Podcast drop me a note below…

  • For folks who are just starting out, CreativePro Office is open source and fairly easy to navigate. Great for 1 person free lancers.
  • I was actually on this site the other day checking it out. My biggest drawback was the UI design on this one too. You've seen my desktop, you know how OCD I am. haha.

OpenAtrium looks really good. I have been playing with it for a couple months. It's not ready enough for me throw all my eggs into it, but the endless customizations and the fact that I can make UI decisions are huge selling points for me.

    I'm not a big fan of GoPlan's UI, but I haven't tried 2.0 yet.

Like Cotton, I'm a big UI snob...so, small ineffeciencies REALLY get to me after a few days.
  • If you have a sandbox w/ OpenAtrium up and running on it sometime I would love to check it out, I just watched some of their tutorial videos and I was impressed. Of course I compare everything to BaseCamp. :-)

Hi Cotton, shoot me an email and I'll be glad to create a test project for you. My email can be found on my website (not trying to spam - just don't want my email posted here) www.headlinercreative.com

I use OA and love it! I've tweaked it to put issue tracking on the calendar, so you can assign tasks and the due dates are easily scannable. I also have a design gallery feature which allows me to post mockups for review.
  • thanks for the offer. you can email us at: corporate-at-pleth.com
  • Which reminds me. Open Atrium, the Drupal project management app, looks very promising. Honestly I would think it is a much better project management app than the rest simply because you can easily extend it's features. Because it is built in Drupal, if there is something you want or need in a project management app, you can fairly simply build that functionality.
  • I have heard a lot about Open Atrium but I haven't ever seen it up close before. It makes sense to me that it might be another viable option since you can customize it to fit your needs and don't have to work within set options (like in BaseCamp, AC, etc.)
  • Made the switch from Basecamp to GoPlan a couple of years ago for my freelance work. However, at CJRW Interactive we are using Basecamp.
  • What do you like about GoPlan over BaseCamp?
  • GoPlan 2.0 was launched I believe in the past year or so. I prefer their UI over Basecamp's. They have added issue tracking & blogging (though I don't use the blogging feature). Instead of the Milestone Task approach, GoPlan uses a full calendar and handles it a little differently. Even without all that you are getting a very similar product that Basecamp offers but at less of a cost. Of course if you are using Basecamp's other products it would probably make since to use their project management app.
  • I have to check into that, I am a UI fanatic, that's the main reason I am not a fan of ActiveCollab. I have always thought that BaseCamp set the mark when it comes to User Interface.
