Experimental Video for Wimpy’s

I have bought two cameras recently and invested in a small collection of video production software to familiarize myself w/ video production. This is definitely not something I want to do professionally but I am enjoying learning everything as I go along. This is an experimental video I put together using iMovie. For a total newbie, I am pretty proud of myself…

Get Motivated Seminar / Little Rock, AR

Updated: 08/31 – Okay, so I didn’t make it to this event because I just have too many irons in the fire that are getting hot all at once but I am interested to hear from those of you that might have attended. How as it? Was it what you expected? What did you pull from it??

I’m not really one for sitting still through a motivational speech, much less an all day affair but through a series of offers that I can’t refuse, I am going to be attending the event in Little Rock tomorrow w/ Bill Cosby, Rudy Giuliani, Steve Forbes, Lou Holtz, General Colin Powell, Laura Bush, Terry Bradshaw, and more…

I will more than likely be the guy who is struggling to sit still all day long, if you see me, be sure to stop and say hello! I will likely have my laptop w/ me taking notes and possibly blogging during the event if there is a wi-fi connection.

Anyone else attending?

What a Crazy Week!!!

Image15I woke up this Monday morning around 4:15 when I heard a loud pop outside my office window, just a few seconds later a loud clap of thunder seemed to shake our entire home. Dazed by what had just happened I almost jumped out of my skin when the loud surge detection monitors that my entire office equipment was wired into started screaming. It didn’t take me but a second to realize that my electricity was completely out in my office so I decided to go checkout the rest of the house. When I got to the Kitchen I noticed that all of the appliances were off and the breaker outlets they were all plugged into had been tripped and blinking red, something I had never seen before.

It was about this point that I realized that our home had taken a direct hit from lightning so I ran outside and did a perimeter inspection at 5am in my pajamas to make sure nothing was burning anywhere. Fortunately I didn’t see any fires or gigantic holes in my roof so I headed back inside to check my breaker box. I noticed that several breakers had been thrown so I reset them and headed back into our kitchen only to find that the wall sockets that our appliances were plugged into had thrown themselves again for some reason so I went around and reset all of our electrical outlets and returned to my office to access the situation, and you guessed it, a vast majority of my equipment got nailed..

In the photo above you can see my development and testing environment that consists of three separate machines, a development machine (DEV-001), a testing environment (DEV-002), and a rules driven machine (DEV-003). Upon further inspection I determined that all three of these machines components were fried, from the mainboard all the way to the hard drive, sizzled, toast…

Frustrated and freaking out by all of the chaos that had fallen into my lap to kick start the week I decided to break for 15 minutes to take our puppy to the vet to have a routine neutering procedure taken care of. The idea was that we would pick him up later that afternoon and we could return home. Well, long story short, the vet called and informed us that our puppy needed not only to have the procedure that we came in with but he also needed immediate eye surgery to repair damage that we had noticed gradually worsening the past 2 days. In addition he also had an umbilical hernia that needed to be repaired as well. We authorized him to perform all of these procedures and then I focus on the process of getting my systems back online. After a few phone calls to my Insurance provider I was able to get my claim in the system and start on reconstructing my systems. As we went through and tested everything it didn’t take long to realize that most everything was going to have to be replaced so we took out pen and paper (because there is nothing in the house to type on) and started listing replacement components. Once I had everything listed that needed to be replaced I set out to pick up everything I could. Finally we returned home looking like we had robbed Egghead and got to work. Image18

In addition to my office equipment we had several other pieces ruined from the surge, but I wasn’t crying about any of them near as bad as I have been my systems.

Five Things I Learned This Week:

  1. If you have a home office, make sure your homeowners policy doesn’t have a cap on it to just pay a certain amount in the event your business equipment is lost or stolen.
  2. When hurriedly running around to replace your damaged property, be sure to hang onto any receipts / paperwork that you get, the Insurance people will want you to fish those out of the garbage, scan them, or email copies to them. Ironically if you don’t have a system online to email or send a fax with, you need to develop a plan for accomplishing this quickly.
  3. Backups of Everything! Fortunately I had my entire system backed up to a cloud storage solution that my partners and I offer through Pleth. I immediately logged into my account w/ my iPhone and realized that all of my data, and my clients data was safe and sound. I can’t imagine life had things been different.
  4. Pugs can’t swim.
  5. Pugs should wear helmets and flotation devices at all times.

Okay, shifting gears, we called the vet to see how Bogey did and they said he did great but that he would need to spend the night there and that we could pick him up the following morning. No problem, I got back to work and managed to get two systems somewhat functional.  And as for the dog, we picked him up yesterday afternoon, he had one leg shaved, stitches in his tummy and his privates, one of those lampshade things on his head, and one eye sewn shut so he couldn’t bother it while it heals. Taking in everything this poor puppy had been through the day before and seeing the pathetic look on his face I quickly realized that my problems could have been a lot worse, and at least I still have my reproductive organs intact…

I should also add that just 2 weekends ago I had to fish this same puppy out of a swimming pool that he accidentally backed off into by accident. It was 40 degrees! Life is an adventure to say the least!

The Wimpy’s Experience…

wimpys-250-forblogI have had several people ask me what they needed to order when they visit Wimpy’s Burgers & Fries for the first time on Monday, so I figured I would put together some high points that I highly recommend…

  • The Raspberry Milkshake – I personally had a hand in formulating this awesome milkshake! I can’t give away the trade secrets as to what makes it so awesome but I will just say this, the ice cream at Wimpy’s is about 6 times richer and creamier than any other ice crème in town. I will also say that the raspberry flavoring really puts this frozen delight in a league all to itself.
  • Wimpy’s Signature Double Cheeseburger – Prior to my involvement in this project I think I always knew that there were some burgers that were just consistently better than other burgers but I never gave it a lot of thought as to why that was. I learned that if you want to make a great burger, you can’t concern yourself with food costs, or what’s the healthiest. When engineering a masterpiece like the Wimpy’s Signature Double (also comes in a triple) you have to pay close attention to detail and let your taste buds guide the process the entire way. Little details you will notice about the sourdough bun or the overall flavor of the beef itself didn’t just come about, hours upon hours of trial and error have gone into making this masterpiece!
  • Bats & Balls – This is probably one of my absolute favorite appetizers of all time. If you like Fried Cheese, you have to check out this awesome appetizer! I will leave it at that…

Wimpy's Burgers & Fries on Urbanspoon

Wimpy’s Opening Monday!

wimpys-250-forblogI can’t count the number of emails, text messages, tweets, and telephone calls that I have gotten this week wondering if Wimpy’s Burgers & Fries was open yet. Up until this week I have answered w/ the standard, it’s going to be two weeks response. In fact, several of you have been quick to point out that we have been saying two weeks for the past two months!

Well, the wait is over! Wimpy’s will be opening it’s doors on Monday, January 11th. We want to thank all of you for not losing interest along the way while we wrestled with a variety of internal projects ranging from underground plumbing to point of sale software! One afternoon we even found ourselves in the parking lot, completely locked out of the building because the doors had malfunctioned. While trying to gain entry our puppy somehow gouged his eye with something while we weren’t looking and the entire remainder of the afternoon was spent at the emergency animal clinic in Maumelle tending to him! This transpired about a month ago and he just had surgery on the eye yesterday and is recovering well w/ one eye sewn up and a lampshade over his head. Poor dog.

Don’t get me wrong, being a part of this project has been an awesome experience for Donna and I both. I have learned so many things about the foodservice industry that I didn’t have a clue 6 about months ago. One minute we might be troubleshooting receipt printers and the next trying to perfect the Raspberry Shake! Donna has also had a blast experimenting to formulate the perfect recipe for wedding cake cupcakes!

The plan for Monday is that it will be our soft opening to allow our team to get all of the kinks worked out before we have our grand opening, etc. Stay tuned for more information as things evolve, but if your stomach starts growling Monday morning, head on over and have yourself a Signature Wimpy Burger!!!  Also, be sure to follow Wimpy’s on Twitter and Facebook for your chance to be picked at random to win free food!

A lot of you have also asked about Franchise Opportunities, at this point we don’t quite have everything packaged but we should have in the very near future. For the time being, if you are interested, please visit the Wimpy’s Corporate Website and complete the form there w/ your contact information and once things settle down someone will follow up with you…

Central Interactive 2011 Announced

central-interactive-logoIf you follow my blog you are probably already aware that a group of us have been discussing the idea of establishing a large tech conference here in central Arkansas. We have also received a lot of press coverage pertaining to this idea, last year in The Arkansas Times and most recently in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette. Well, this past week we had our first planning session with the steering committee at the Conway Area Chamber of Commerce and I was floored by the awesome turnout we had as well as the level of enthusiasm. I think this crazy idea might be within reach…

During our first meeting we didn’t get as much accomplished as we would have liked so we opted to form some committees in our Basecamp and everyone break out into groups to help work toward various goals. I think we have over 30 registered users in our basecamp as of right now and the interaction this past week has been phenomenal. If you were unable to attend our initial planning session and would like to be involved in the early stages of planning this huge event, please feel free to drop me a comment below and I will see to it that you are added to our Basecamp. Also, thanks to Arlton Lowry, we now have a logo to serve as our initial branding, and we hope to have a temporary website up this next week! Stay tuned as this project evolves…

Also, we now have a wufoo form online for volunteers to signup to be on our committees, we have many roles available and could really use your help! Click here to signup…

Pleth Welcomes Lanny Heidbreder

lanny-hThis past weekend we had the entire Pleth crew from Batesville, Conway, and Jonesboro under one roof to just hangout for a few hours and it didn’t take me long to realize that our little company that started w/ 3 equity partners and a handful of regional accounts, has grown into something quite impressive. It was also obvious to me that our team has the right chemistry to do some pretty amazing things in the very near future, and I am not just saying that…

When my partners and I first decided to expand Pleth’s presence in North Eastern Arkansas by adding Steven Trotter and Craig McCoy to our team last year, I don’t think any of us had any idea as to how quickly things would start coming together. The talent level and determination our team has now is absolutely incredible and it’s allowed us to take the next logical step by adding yet another incredibly talented individual to the team, Lanny Heidbreder.

Lanny is an incredibly sharp individual and he brings a pretty wide skillset to the team. We are extremely happy to have him on board. In just the short amount of time that he has been with us he has already collaborated on several amazing client projects.

Snow Day 2011 in Conway…

conway-snowThe 2011 winter season has been one for the record books for central Arkansas. This week we witnessed one of the biggest snow events we have seen in years, I personally have between 6-8 inches of snow in my backyard. Yesterday cabin fever set in and I absolutely had to get out of the house so we bundled up, grabbed the puppy and hit the streets. I carried along my camera so I could snap some shots of the winter wonderland, and I am glad I did.

When we turned onto College Street yesterday we glanced over to the hill behind the Conway Country Club and noticed about 200 people lined up on the side of the large slope sledding down the hill. My father in law, being just as big of a child as I am when it comes to snow couldn’t resist so we headed that direction. I snapped close to 100 photos yesterday. I shared a few on facebook but the rest can be found in a photo gallery I just posted here…

Wimpy’s Burgers & Fries

wmpclogoThis next month Conway will witness the grand opening of Wimpy’s Burgers and Fries in the Towne Centre Shopping Center across the parking lot from the all-new Cinemark Theatre. Wimpy’s will serve an array of American food ranging from our Signature Wimpy Burger to soft serve ice cream, click here to see full menu.

The Conway location is still in the process of being renovated but everything is coming along right on schedule. This past week some of you might have noticed that the new copper roof went on and the new wood floors are actually being put down today. To create a family friendly, entertaining, atmosphere Wimpy’s will also will have flat screen HDTV’s around the dining area as well as free public WI-FI access. As of right now there are also plans to add outdoor patio seating sometime down the road…

If you want to learn more about Wimpy’s you can visit www.wimpysconway.com, that lists the menu, news and information related to the grand opening, and links to download job applications. Also, to build momentum and boost awareness prior to the grand opening, Wimpy’s is using social media to give away free food to random friends on Facebook and Twitter, so if you haven’t already, I recommend following the links to Facebook and Twitter above and connecting with Wimpy’s.

If you are interested in being a part of the Wimpy’s team, please download the Employment Application below and either return it by mail to: Wimpy’s Burgers & Fries, 28 Sutherland Road, Conway, Arkansas 72032, or you can email it here…  (Download Employment Application: Application for Employment (doc) / Application for Employment (pdf))

Weight Watchers PointsPlus

weight-watchers-logoLate last year my dad started going to Weight Watchers with my Aunt so he could lose some weight. It turned out to be one of the best decisions he had ever made, he has lost close to 30lbs and is now eating healthier than he has his entire life.

After seeing his results, my wife and I decided we would get involved as well. I have had an issue recently that prohibits me from exercising like I had initially wanted to do at the start of the year so changing my diet seemed like the next best thing…

We went to our first meeting two weeks ago and did our weigh-in and orientation and I left out of the meeting w/ my reservations. The new Points Plus system just seemed to liberal to me in terms of the amount of carbs (vegetables and fruits) that were basically free foods. My last dieting experience was almost 5 years ago when I lost a lot of weight on the Atkins Diet, this is a whole new ballgame.

On the Weight Watchers diet you can basically eat anything you want as long as you come within a set amount of points for the day. In addition you also have 49 bonus add-on points you can use for special occasions like birthday parties, etc., where you know you are going to indulging in things like Birthday Cake!

Probably the biggest testimonial I have for the program though is the fact that I was probably looking at having to have a medical procedure that was going to put me out of commission for almost 2 weeks. I have increased the amount of fiber in my diet by over 500% since starting the Weight Watchers diet and that situation that was bothering me is no longer an issue! I will spare you the details, just trust me, it wasn’t going to be fun!!

This past week at our first weigh-in I was the “biggest loser” at our meeting, I lost 12.5lbs. I am pretty sure that it’s going to be tough to stay on that fast track but I anticipate good results throughout. Our refrigerator contents and the items that my wife and I would typically consume have also taken a complete 360, we now have lots of fruits and vegetables in the house that replace all of the processed groceries.  Stay tuned for more as we continue this program…
