Thoughts on Joe Paterno

Update: 11/10/11 10:30am – The more I am learning about this case, and after having read the grand jury testimony in the Sandusky case, I’m starting to look at this entire thing a little differently. I really want to believe that Joe Pa didn’t do anything wrong, or try to cover up / do the right thing in this case, but if some of the allegations I have heard since writing this post are true, I’m going to be pretty heartbroken.

I returned home this evening and saw a firestorm of tweets related to the news that Penn State’s Board of Trustees had decided to go ahead and fire Joe Paterno even though he had already announced that he was retiring at the end of the season. I was shocked to say the least. Now, before I go any further I want to make this known:

I despise the idea of a grown man, especially a person of trust, like Jerry Sandusky, molesting young children. It’s wrong, and I pray for the victims and their families. I just want to get this on the record, I also have no sympathy for anyone who participates in these acts either directly or indirectly by trying to cover it up.

The part that bothers me in this whole scenario is that I have a lot of respect for Joe Paterno, he’s always carried himself w/ a lot of dignity, class, and integrity over the years. He’s coached college football for over 60 years and in those 60 years there’s never really been any questioning his character on or off the field. He’s still married to his wife Sue that he’s been faithful to since the day they said “I do”. There’s never been any mention of Joe Pa sneaking around or having affairs, instead there’s always been stories about how he and his wife have given millions of dollars to various charities and establish educational facilities at Penn State. I know for a fact that the student library at Penn State came about as a donation from Joe and Sue Paterno. If you think about it long enough, I bet you can’t think of one skeleton that has ever came out of Joe Paterno’s closet over the years.

I recall a story where some sports vendor at Penn State, it was either Nike, Under Armour, or Adidas, approached the coach before a ball game and asked him to put on one of their sweaters to wear during a ball game. I can remember the sports vendor was under the impression that their contractual agreement with the school had locked in the fact that Joe Pa was going to wear their sweater on the sidelines as some sort of endorsement. Upon hearing this request, Joe Pa just smiled at the corporate representative and told them no that he thought he would just wear the sweater he had on because he liked it better, the rep stood there shocked and almost insisted that he change sweaters. Joe Paterno, still smiling, looked at the rep and told them that it wasn’t happening because his grandchildren had bought him that sweater and then he walked out of the room. To the best of my knowledge, he was never asked to change sweaters again. This is just one story about Joe Paterno that I have heard over the years, he was a class act.

If I am wrong about Joe Paterno’s character and if it comes out in trial that he did know about the child molestation and tried to cover it up, I will be the first to admit that he needs to go down w/ the rest of the group involved. This is something we don’t know for sure yet but we will soon. I’m saddened by the fact that one low-life, Jerry Sandusky, has brought down one of the brightest personalities in college football.

One other thing I would like to mention in closing, I feel as if Penn State’s Board of Trustees jumped the gun and acted prematurely given the fact that Sandusky hasn’t even been to trial yet. I feel as if they should have just left Joe Paterno’s resignation at the end of the season, that he had already announced, stand as his punishment. You just don’t fire someone who has been loyal and without blemish for over 60 years w/ a phone call if you can’t substantiate the allegations against him with anything other than here say (and that’s exactly what it is at this point, hear say, nothing has went to trial yet).

What are your thoughts??

Houston Nutt: Deja Vu in Oxford

This past weekend my wife and I rendezvoused w/ my parents at the farm and headed to Oxford, Mississippi bright and early Saturday morning to see the Razorbacks do battle w/ the Ole Miss Rebels. Needless to say we went thinking that we were going to quickly do work on the Rebels. That simply wasn’t the case. Yes, we did get a win, but it was a hard fought win that I wasn’t for sure was going to happen until the very last few seconds clicked off the clock. The Razorbacks played terrible, but that’s another story…

The biggest story from the game, in my opinion, happened after the game when Coach Houston Nutt went after Neal McCready, a sports writer, because he had predicted the Rebels to lose 49-10. Here’s exactly what he said:

“I don’t read your stuff, they tell me what you say,” said Nutt, looking at McCready. “One of my freshmen told me that Neal McCready wrote that we’d get beat 49-10. Wasn’t no 49-10.”

Should there have been a parade following the game because the score wasn’t near as bad as they had thought it would be? Should everyone just overlook the fact that Ole Miss just broke an SEC record by losing 10 consecutive conference games in a row? There have been a ton of stories about this since it happened: Commercial Appeal (Memphis), and Clarion Ledger (Jackson). I really enjoyed Neal’s follow-up post after the press conference. Watching all of this transpire on the way home from the ballgame on my iPhone I realized that this is so reminiscent of the time Houston called into debate sports writers Wally Hall on The Show w/ No Name one afternoon. The guy has so much trouble taking blame for his shortcomings and lack of ability that it’s sickening. Rather than accept one bit of responsibility for blowing a play call or poor clock management, he quickly turns his attention to the media and whoever else is handy. His ego was what ultimately turned the vast majority of the Razorback nation against him and it doesn’t appear that he can do anything about changing that.

I’m pretty sure that he’ll be leaving Oxford at the end of this year, never to return to the big leagues of the SEC again. At the end of the day, it’s probably our fault for ever elevating him to this level to start with. I just feel bad for the guy because he is obviously out of his league, and is getting ready to burn some more bridges. Good thing he has Jimmy Sexton looking out for him.

Someone sent me this and I thought it was highly appropriate…

Seeing Houston go off in the direction he did at the press conference really brought back some memories. If Oxford needs to know where to get airplanes or banners, they just need to let us know here at Arkansas. FYI, if you want to watch the full press conference, here’s a link…

Thoughts on Dan Wheldon

As far as motorsports go I’ve never been as big of an Indy Car fan as I am a NASCAR fan for obvious reasons, but I do have a few drivers in the Indy league that I have always liked and admired, Dan Wheldon was one. I wasn’t home watching the race today like I had originally planned and it hit me like a brick that Dan Wheldon had been killed in Vegas. I pulled up YouTube as quick as I could get to my iPad today and watched the footage of the wreck (see below), and couldn’t believe my eyes.

I always thought Wheldon had a cool accent, that’s certainly going to be missed. Just like the NASCAR family, I know the IndyCar family is pretty close knit and I can’t imagine what they are going through right now. I can remember a point years ago after Dan had accomplished pretty much there was to accomplish in the Indy series he approached Ray Evernham about pursuing NASCAR, and I had really hoped to see that deal get worked out but it never did. The guy was 33 years old.

In case you missed the wreck footage, you can see that below:

Houston, We Have Another Problem…

Yeah, I’ll be the first to admit I still hold an unhealthy grudge toward Houston Nutt for a host of obvious reasons and I delight in watching his football world fall apart. This week I read a post by Aaron Torres where he went into great detail as to why this year will likely be Houston Nutt’s final chapter in SEC football. I have kidded around on Twitter that it has been rumored that instead of an airplane waiting on him to whisk him away when Ole Miss has had enough, there will likely be a late model mini-van w/ some kids Mom sitting in the driving seat to take him to his next job, coaching varsity football somewhere near Memphis…

In case you missed it, here’s a portion of Pete Boone’s (Ole Miss AD) letter to boosters this past week:

The fullness of the Ole Miss football experience that you deserve and have generously invested in, has not lived up to expectations recently.  Coach Nutt and I met today and discussed the current state of Ole Miss football.  Both of us are extremely disappointed in our performance this year.  We agreed that to be successful, this disappointment must be met head on with solutions for improvement.  We discussed several areas that needed improvement and I support Coach Nutt in his effort to correct those areas.

As I have said, Saturday’s performance and our running two-season SEC record are unacceptable. Our commitment to compete at a championship level is as strong as ever and we will succeed!  We need your continued support of the team as Saturday is another SEC weekend and we need you here!

Last weeks loss to Vanderbilt cracked me up, Vandy was running their 3rd and 4th string in and out of the game (one time I could have sworn they even had the flute player on the field). This week Ole Miss will also lose to Georgia and it will likely be just as funny…

Memphis Heat: The Story of Memphis Wrasslin’

Ron Hall Autographed a Poster for the Wall in My Office!

Growing up in the mid-south during the 70′s and 80′s, every kid I knew was glued to Memphis Wrestling every Saturday morning at 11am on WMC-TV5. I can vividly remember sitting in the floor with my dad watching Jerry Lawler do battle with bad guys like The Dream Machine, Austin Idol, Handsome Jimmy Valiant or any other bad guy Jimmy Hart had brought in to dethrone the King.  I can even remember my mom loading up a minivan full of my 5th grade buddies early one Saturday morning in December, a long long time ago, to go see studio wrestling in person for my 10th birthday. I also remember getting a typed letter in the mail from Lance Russell a few weeks later wishing me a happy birthday and thanking us for coming to the show, I think I took it to school to show off to my friends the next day because he really signed it…

In the pre-internet early 80′s growing up in the country on the farm w/out cable television we had one of the earliest satellite dishes known to man so I had the opportunity to watch wrestling from all over the country but few things captured my attention and drew me in like Championship Wrestling out of Memphis. I am sure that there were a lot of things going on in the world at the time that I didn’t know about but I can’t imagine anything being more important to me as a kid, even the adults talked about wrestling like it was a real deal, sort of a soap opera like ‘Dallas’ or ‘Falcon Crest’, only difference it was men dressed in leotards and tights beating the crap out of one another. Of course we all knew it was a work, kayfabe or fake, but it was presented in such a manner that it didn’t really matter, much different than “sports entertainment” is presented today. Much different.

Well, this evening I talked my friend Charlie, who was also addicted to Championship Wrestling during the 80′s, to tag along with me to a screening in Little Rock of a documentary called; ‘Memphis Heat: The True Story of Memphis Wrestling‘. This is a documentary I had been waiting on for what seemed like an eternity. I was concerned that I had watched the trailer for this film on YouTube so many times that the film would be a disappointment by the time I got to see it on DVD, boy was I wrong. This documentary was off the hook entertaining and was worth the wait. I even got to hang out w/ Ron Hall, one of the producers of the film and the writer of ‘Sputnik, Masked Men, & Midgets: The Early Days of Memphis Wrestling‘.

The documentary was shown at Market Street Cinema in Little Rock, a theater I had never been and didn’t even know how to find, but the venue could not have been better. There was probably 40 or 50 people in the crowd, mostly all men (imagine that), and every time a wrestler would pop up on the screen that we hadn’t seen or heard about in 20 years we would erupt violently in laughter. Prime example, Tojo Yammamoto! I hadn’t seen or thought about that little guy in ages but when I saw him on that screen karate chopping people I was immediately reminded of a time in my hometown when wrestling came through to do a card at our national guard armory and I was so enamored by this guy that I was scared to go ask him for an autograph for fear that he would throw salt in my eyes or hit me with his kendo stick or wooden flip-flops.

This documentary had so many “high spots” as they put it in the wrestling industry that I could literally sit here all evening trying to list them all. It was so awesome to see guys like Jerry Lawler, Bill Dundee, Referee Jerry Calhoun, Jackie Fargo, Handsome Jimmy Valiant, and the late Sputnik Monroe talk about their days in the hotbed that was Memphis Wrestling. One highlight that I will share involves Buddy Wayne, a former wrestler back in the 70′s who went on to become a booker for Memphis Wrestling talking about wrestlers actually wrestling a bear, the entire theater was hysterical. I can remember Buddy Wayne chasing a group of us unruly kids out of the wrestling ring one weekend they were in town doing two shows at our national guard armory. About the second time he had to run us off we thought he was going to have a heart attack.

I could literally go on forever talking about how awesome this documentary was forever but I will wrap this up by promising you this, if you grew up in the mid-south and remember Championship Wrestling, and were drawn in like most of us were at the time, you absolutely have to get to a showing of this film when it comes to your town or own the DVD which will be available in time for Christmas. You will not be disappointed. I promise.

The only critique I have for the film was that they didn’t have Dirty Dutch Mantell in the film. I feel like he could have added a lot to the storyline of the movie. His blog is one of the best blogs out there and his books are probably some of the best written, genuine accounts of old school professional wrestling in existence. Dutch did a lot of the booking in the Memphis Territory alongside Jerry Lawler, Jerry Jarrett, and Bill Dundee.

In case you haven’t already seen the trailer to this film, here you go…

Arkansas Diamonds Football

200px-ARDiamonds If you know me very well at all you are probably aware that I am just not that big of a baseball fan, and typically this time of year I am extremely bored.  But, after discovering that the Arkansas Diamonds (formerly the Arkansas Twisters) of the Indoor Football League, who make their home right here in the Natural State, and play their home games at Verizon Arena, my boredom fades away fast.

If you aren’t familiar with Indoor, or Arena Football, you should definitely check it out, especially if you are a football fan. The action is fast and the ball gets aired out a lot more.  In order to help you get acquainted a little bit, here’s what I am going to do…

Win 2 Tickets for the May 1st Game vs Texas Roughnecks!

I am giving away 2 tickets to the May 1st Arkansas Diamond’s football game against the West Texas Roughnecks at Verizon Arena.  To be eligible to win, here’s what you have to do…

Thoughts on the Daytona 500

This past weekend I was so excited about the Daytona 500 and the start of the 2010 NASCAR season that I didn’t know what to do w/ myself.  The fact that Mark Martin, my favorite driver, who is also a client, qualified on the pole for the race didn’t help the matter any either.  By the time the pre-race coverage was winding down on Speed and it was time to flip over to Fox to watch the race I was literally chomping at the bit, whatever that means I was doing it.

New Rule Changes for 2010

For the most part I enjoyed the race. The rule changes implemented by NASCAR giving us more opportunities to see Green-White-Checker finishes this year as well as the promise to let drivers be more expressive with their emotions are going to make for a fun season this year.  Some other changes this year was the re-introduction of the tail-wing on the COT’s and larger holes in the restrictor plates for the superspeedways.  I think these two changes to the cars were responsible for a lot of the close racing we witnessed this weekend.

We Have Bigger Potholes than that on I-40…

Honestly the only thing that bothered me about the race this weekend was probably the same thing that aggravated every other racing fan out there, we got to sit there for over 2 hours at 2 different points of the race and literally watch bondo dry on the asphalt while repair crews repaired a pothole in one of the turns.  David Reutiman brought up a good point during one of the long red flags, dirt track racers aren’t strangers to holes on the track, you just remember where these holes are and go around them.  I think NASCAR should have at least inspected the track before hand and noticed this place prior to the race.  It’s hard for me to believe that these cars knocked this hole in the asphalt during the Cup Series race, it had to have at least been started earlier in the week, and somewhat evident during the 24 hour race a few days earlier.

Congratulations to Jamie McMurray…

All complaining aside, the ending of the race was well worth the wait, even though Mark Martin didn’t win.  The sentimental winner of the race was Jamie McMurray. Here’s a guy who at the end of last season was released by Roush-Fenway Racing due to the limitations mandated by NASCAR as to how many teams an owner could have under one organization, not even sure if he would have a ride or not for 2010, finally secures a position w/ Ganassi-Sabates-Earnhardt Racing on their team, ironically the team that brought him into the series as a rookie, and low and behold he repays them by bringing home the most coveted trophy in NASCAR.

Emotions Running High in Victory Circle…

When Jamie pulled into the winners circle I knew it was going to be an emotional thing, just given the history of Jamie McMurray.  A lot of people, myself included, had more or less written him off after his less than stellar performance at Roush-Fenway.  When Jamie got out of the car he was greeted by his dad and then interviewed standing in winners circle.  About 30 seconds into the interview he just breaks down and starts balling, a few moments later his wife shows up behind him and they embrace for a few minutes before Jamie returns to the interview.  He was so emotional that even I got choked up watching, and that rarely happens.  This was the type of show that NASCAR needed to put on to kick off the season in my opinion.

It’s Perfectly Acceptable for a Dude to Cry When He Has Just Won the Daytona 500…

Now, regarding how emotional Jamie was in winners circle, I know that there are a lot of people out there that probably were turned off by that.  I can see where you are coming from.  Back when we all watched Tim Tebow sit on the sideline while Florida was defeated by Alabama, I told a lot of my Twitter friends that there was only two acceptable times for a football player to cry on the field, one was when you can see your own bone sticking through your leg, and the other time is when you are holding the championship trophy up over your head and the season is over.  Well, in that same vein, there’s not a lot of room in NASCAR for men who cry on national television, but given Jamie McMurray’s story I am going to give him a pass on that.  In fact, a few of my tweeps and I had a discussion following the race on Twitter and decided to make an amendment to our man code to also make it acceptable to cry when you are in victory lane at The Daytona 500 too.

Did you see Dale Jr.?

One other thing that I think is worth of mentioning about the last lap of the race, Dale Earnhardt Jr., the guy that everyone likes to speculate and worry about, came from 10th place to finish in 2nd place.  Let’s all hope that the chemistry is right this season for Dale Jr. to have a competitive season.

What did you think of the race?
I would love to hear your thoughts, be sure to leave comments below…

Matt Jones Lands Deal w/ Bengals

matt-jones-jaguars-release I was just driving home from running some errands listening to the Buzz, a local sports talk radio station, and they were doing a telephone interview w/ Matt Jones about today’s announcement that he has landed a 1 year deal w/ the Bengals.

This is big news for Jones and I hope that he views it as a second chance and will seize the opportunity.  Working w/ a QB like Carson Palmer could be good for him as well as working alongside Ocho Cinco.  Let’s just all pray it works out.  Here’s a snippet I found online about the arrangement:

The Bengals and receiver Matt Jones have agreed on a one-year deal, said a source familiar with the discussions who spoke on condition of anonymity because no contract has been signed. Jones would be the latest player trying to revive his career in Cincinnati after legal problems. The Cincinnati Enquirer reported the deal would pay him approximately $700,000.

In case you are out of the loop, Jones, who was one of the most exciting players to graduate from Arkansas in a long time, has had some off the field troubles and honestly never really settled into his role at the Jaquars in my opinion.  He also didn’t live up to the expectations that a lot of us had for him.  Hopefully this time it’s going to be a good fit.

Thoughts on Palin at Daytona 500 NASCAR Race

It takes a brave person to blog about anything remotely tied to politics, of course unless they are just too funny to pass up.  This one is just that.  I might have to reach out to my good friend and political blogger David Kinkade to see if he wants to head down to Daytona w/ me for the 500 and cover this thing from a political perspective.

It has been widely reported this past week that the former Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin plans to attend the Daytona 500 this year.  At first I got no fewer than a dozen emails and tweets w/ links to the stories making the announcement.  I think that this is going to be worth watching.  Do I think Palin has a chance at the presidency?  Um, no.  But, do I like Political Humor?  Yes.

For the most part, everyone in attendance at that race is there for one reason, NASCAR.  Not to say that I am smarter than your average Joe (no pun intended), but I can totally see what Palins handlers are trying to accomplish. They think that since the South is traditionally conservative, and this is probably the biggest event in the South, they can just parade her down here and all of the “rednecks” in Daytona will get their picture made with her and their votes are in the bag.  It’s a little insulting for those of us who can see how we are being viewed.

But, see what they don’t understand is this, picking a presidential candidate is the furthest thing on the minds of 90% of the people that are at the Daytona 500.  In fact, I would venture to say that half of them won’t remember she was even there the next day, unless of course she loses her top going down the giant slip and slide in the campgrounds area, but hey that would be a story for TMZ to cover!  Heck most of them won’t even remember the slip-n-slide thing if someone puts Dale Jr. in the wall.

I will say this though, good try Palin camp.  When Palin signed on w/ Fox the other day, that was more or less her trophy, time to move on.  While she might be an awesome cheerleader for the RNC (stop trying to picture her in a cheerleading outfit) she won’t be president.  This might have something to do with it…

But, hey if she’s going to be at the race I hope she has a good time.  I do hope that she realizes that one of the reasons the Daytona 500 is so popular is because that’s the one day that everyone at the race, or watching from home has completely blocked out what’s going on in the world today, healthcare reform, taxes, bailouts, wars, etc., nothing else matters!  So please don’t bring it up while you are there…

Feel free to parade her around though, heck even try to start you up one of those mini tea party / campaign rally things, there are people who will attend I am sure.  After all, they still make Velcro shoes for those that never learned to tie the other kind.  But eventually you are going to have to let your girl go and find yourself another candidate that can be taken seriously.  Please.

I don’t know who is pulling all of the strings in the Palin camp and leading her around the country, heck she’s been here in the south more lately than she has Alaska, but if they want to get a head start and make things interested during the next election, they need to check out this dude…  Granted, you are not going to agree with any candidate 100% of the time, but when trying to pick one from the group, people usually eliminate the dingbat first.  Oh, and before you comment to call me a Liberal, just know this, I consider myself a conservative and think the world of Mike Huckabee as a person and a politician, just can’t get behind Palin.

Some Predictions for the 2010 NASCAR Season

daytona500logo2010 With the Daytona 500 just a few more weeks away I thought I would go ahead and make some predictions for the 2010 season.  While last year was an awesome season, and it was great seeing my favorite driver Mark Martin do so well, I really think that this year has to be different for a few reasons…  By different, I am not implying that anything needs to change in terms of the format, or the venues, or even the cars, I just think that this year someone besides Jimmie Johnson needs to dominate, and there probably needs to be a lot more on and off the track bump drafting between the drivers.

When I say on and off the track bump drafting, I mean that the drivers need to all feel free to conduct themselves like the drivers in the 70’s and 80’s did.  I look at the current NASCAR driver roster and out of the 50-60 drivers that I have followed for a while, a lot of them just don’t have any personalities to them in comparison to some of the old timers like Ricky Rudd, or Junior Johnson.  The point I am trying to make is this, who would you rather see coming back out onto the track after Montoya put them into the wall, David Reutiman or Buddy Baker?  I think you can see where I am going.

Granted, I love the sport itself, just watching the teams tweak their equipment to win a race by outperforming their competition with something as simple as an air pressure adjustment really does appeal to me, always has.  But the races you remember are the ones where one driver throws his helmet at another driver on the caution lap.  That’s what I am hoping to see a lot more of this year.

Now, on to my predictions for 2010…

  1. Mark Martin will win the Daytona 500.
  2. Sam Hornish will continue to wreck each week.
  3. Juan Pablo Montoya will morph from a turd into a butterfly. He will also get along with the other drivers a lot better and I think that he has picked up enough experience in NASCAR and this might be his breakout year.
  4. Danica Patrick will make some awesome television commercials, and probably cook a mean pot roast, but she will not win a race in either of the two major series (she might pull off an ARCA race, or finish in the top 10 but I suspect it’s more about merchandising w/ her than anything else.)
  5. Hendrick Motorsports will continue to lead the pack this year but I suspect that Roush and Ford will close the gap a bit as will Penske and Dodge.
  6. Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman will only continue to get better and better.  I have called the Stewart / Newman thing a dream team since day one.  If Mark Martin doesn’t stand on the stage at the end of the year holding the trophy, I hope it’s Ryan or Tony.
  7. I think Dale Earnhardt Jr. will continue to sell an asinine amount of die-cast cars and t-shirts, but I don’t think he will be very visible in his teammates rear view mirrors again this year.  Something is just not right with Team Junior and it hasn’t been for a while.  Until he gets his mojo back they need to milk the t-shirt and decal sales while they last.
  8. Marcos Ambrose will continue to be awesome and by the end of the season his grass root following will rival that of Ken Shraders people. (Ken Shrader has more fans than you can imagine).
  9. Kevin Harvick will move on or do his own thing after this season.
  10. Jamie McMurray will try a few new hairstyles this year but won’t come up with anything he really likes.
  11. I think the Roush guys will either work together a lot better this year or it will fall apart big time between Edwards and Kenseth or Biffle.  Either way, I see Roush stepping in and making some changes if they aren’t contenders from the start.
  12. Kyle Busch will have beer cans thrown at him on more than one occasion this year.
  13. Based on the success that he had with having his ears trimmed back a few years ago, Kurt Busch will further explore some more cosmetic surgeries.  Possibly getting lips like Angelina Jolie.
  14. David Ragan will win a race or two this season, or come very close.
  15. Joey Logano will mature a lot more this season and I look for Hamlin to be a big part of that.
  16. Finally, last but not least.  I think that there is a good possibility that after a long grueling race at one of the super speedways, Tony Stewart will lose all control and eat that keselowski kid.  It will all happen during the post race interviews, and while Stewart is able to devour the boy rapidly, the first televised accidental act of cannibalism will be frowned upon by sponsors and it willl be a serious setback for ABC and they will be forced to let FOX cover the entire season.  This chain of events will make NASCAR fans around the world immediately forgive Tony Stewart and look at him now as a hero…

There you have it folks, let’s watch this season and see how close I am.  I would love to hear your predictions for the upcoming season as well.  Shoot me a comment and let me know what you think.
