Newest Toy: Baofeng UV-5R Ham Radio

BaoFeng-UV-5R-136-174-400-480MHz-Dual-Band-DTMF_10617214_10.bakWhy in the world would someone with very little spare time pick up another hobby, especially one that’s going to require him to be tested in order to even participate? I wish I could give you the answer but I don’t even know myself. I think I want to get my amateur radio certification (technician class) partly because I’ve had this dream for a long time of being a storm chaser. By the end of this month I will have my storm spotter training complete and I figure the next logical step is to get my ham license.

I did a little shopping around before I purchased my Baofeng UV-5R and kept coming back to this model after looking over the other radios on the market. So far I’ve had a lot of fun tinkering with it and listening to local operators go back and forth on the local repeater in Faulkner County. I plan on taking my test either this month or April, hopefully in plenty of time before storm season hits…

If you are not familiar w/ the Baofeng UV-5R, here’s an overview of the radio from a local amateur radio operator (from right here in Conway) that has been very helpful.
