Wimpy’s Burgers & Fries

wmpclogoThis next month Conway will witness the grand opening of Wimpy’s Burgers and Fries in the Towne Centre Shopping Center across the parking lot from the all-new Cinemark Theatre. Wimpy’s will serve an array of American food ranging from our Signature Wimpy Burger to soft serve ice cream, click here to see full menu.

The Conway location is still in the process of being renovated but everything is coming along right on schedule. This past week some of you might have noticed that the new copper roof went on and the new wood floors are actually being put down today. To create a family friendly, entertaining, atmosphere Wimpy’s will also will have flat screen HDTV’s around the dining area as well as free public WI-FI access. As of right now there are also plans to add outdoor patio seating sometime down the road…

If you want to learn more about Wimpy’s you can visit www.wimpysconway.com, that lists the menu, news and information related to the grand opening, and links to download job applications. Also, to build momentum and boost awareness prior to the grand opening, Wimpy’s is using social media to give away free food to random friends on Facebook and Twitter, so if you haven’t already, I recommend following the links to Facebook and Twitter above and connecting with Wimpy’s.

If you are interested in being a part of the Wimpy’s team, please download the Employment Application below and either return it by mail to: Wimpy’s Burgers & Fries, 28 Sutherland Road, Conway, Arkansas 72032, or you can email it here…  (Download Employment Application: Application for Employment (doc) / Application for Employment (pdf))

Conway Chamber Board Appointment

conwaychamberlogoThe other day I received a phone call from Brad Lacy, the CEO of The Conway Chamber of Commerce and the Conway Development Corporation. He told me that he wanted to ask me a question but the only way he would was if my answer to it would be yes. I agreed, and was honored when he asked me to serve on the Board of Directors for the Chamber. Over the years I have had the privilege of serving on numerous chamber and statewide boards and each of them has always been a positive experience for me but a few years ago I told my wife that I just didn’t think that I had the time anymore to devote to serving on these boards because Pleth has experienced extraordinary growth since my partners and I started the company.

However, this was one board appointment that I accepted instantly for a couple of reasons. For one, the Conway Chamber of Commerce has always been an advocate for not only my business, but technology in general. You might remember several months back where I did a blog post discussing how the Conway Chamber really lent us a helping hand in putting together Barcamp Conway and how the Jonesboro Chamber of Commerce was absent during Barcamp Jonesboro. They have just always been very receptive to the needs of our tech community and go that extra mile to make sure startups are successful here. Also, since becoming a member of the Conway Chamber I have had the privilege of building relationships via Twitter and Facebook w/ most of their staff members and I must say, they are just good people.

I went to my first orientation meeting yesterday and learned a lot of interesting things about the Chamber, two tidbits that were most interesting to me was that the chamber was started initially in 1891, that makes this the third century that they have been in operation. Also, the chamber of commerce at one time operated the Toadsuck Ferry because they felt it was important for potential visitors to the city to have a way to get here to spend their money instead of going to other neighboring cities like Morrilton. I never knew that…

I also learned the true meaning of toadsuck, but I will leave that for another blog post… maybe.

Green Cart Deli Hot Dogs FTW!!

Img_0437One thing that I always like to point out on my blog are cool brands or businesses that I run across who are using social media to grow their business and to communicate with their base.  I didn’t have to look very far to find the topic for this post, instead I ran across this guy right here in Conway by way of recommendations from my friends on Twitter!

Brad Kossover who owns and operates Green Cart Deli makes the absolute best hot dog that I have ever eaten, but aside from that, he has an awesome business. In a nutshell he has the first “green” hot dog cart that I have ever seen. By green, I mean that his entire cart is solar powered and even the paper products he uses are recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable.  You can read an interesting article about Brad’s cart on the Log Cabin Democrat website.  One other thing that makes Green Cart Deli really cool in my opinion is the fact that he uses Facebook and Twitter (in addition to his website) to let his growing number of Central Arkansas fans know where he will be located each day so they can track him down for their hot dog. You can find his twitter page and his facebook page to be pretty two way considering he has a full time job managing the cart everyday!

If you are ever in Conway, Arkansas and don’t have lunch plans, I highly recommend you track Brad down, he’s also a really nice guy to talk to.  I am a purist when it comes to hot dogs so I mostly get a plain dog w/ mustard and celery salt, but if you are brave you should check out something from the menu.  Steven Trotter, was in town this weekend and he had the Chicago Dog and raved about it.

Interview w/ KTHV

Conway, Arkansas was recently named as the 6th Geekiest City in the United States by Online Universities. Other cities on the list included Hartford, Silicon Valley, San Diego and Austin. This is a pretty big deal for Conway and I was honored when KTHV called today and asked me if I would be interested in doing an interview w/ them on this topic.

In case you missed the news story today I have reposted it below:

Contrasting Communities…

barcamp_jonesboro This past weekend I had the pleasure of presenting and being a part of the core conversation during Barcamp Jonesboro.  These Barcamp events have really taken off across the country, in fact we recently had Barcamp Conway here in Central Arkansas and it was a huge success.  Barcamp Jonesboro was no different, I have heard that there were approximately 130+ people in attendance for this all day event.

Fellow Pleth team members Steven Trotter and Craig McCoy along with several members of the Jonesboro Coworking group were the organizers of this event that saw people from several states and 2 countries flock to the campus of Arkansas State University to discuss a wide variety of tech related topics.  In addition to being part of the panel for the core conversation I also presented on Geosocial Networking, there were also presentations on social media, mobile development, churches and non-profits, and a wide variety of other topics.

One thing that I did notice during this event in comparison to similar events that I have attended was the lack of media representation.  In fact, during the event my wife even asked me where the newspapers and television stations were at, I shrugged my shoulders and told her that I didn’t know but felt that surely they would be there, but they didn’t show…  Also absent from the event, much to our surprise, was the Jonesboro Chamber of Commerce, who I felt really missed out on a golden opportunity to be a part of such an awesome event.

Coming from Conway, where the Conway Chamber of Commerce bends over backwards to support events like Barcamp Conway and even the Conway Coworking, I guess I just assumed that this type of thing was something that a Chamber of Commerce would jump at the opportunity to be a part of.  I guess I was wrong because I don’t think I saw a single representative from the Chamber of Commerce at the event.  But they weren’t alone, as I mentioned earlier, the newspaper in Jonesboro, The Jonesboro Sun, didn’t bother to show up either.  In addition to that, I learned through a series of Blog Posts from Abbi Siler, they really didn’t even offer to lend a hand in promoting the event or posting a post event article.  You should definitely check out these blog posts from Abbi: Why Can’t We Work Together? and More than Just a News Story… (be sure to read the email exchanges between Abbi and David Mosesso, the editor for the Jonesboro Sun).

I think you will find after reading these email exchanges that our friends at the Jonesboro Sun might not get social media at all.  This is a shame, especially given the downward spiral that the hometown newspaper industry has seen the past years.  I have formally invited Abbi and David Mossesso to appear on The Cotton Club to put this discussion on the table and hopefully find some common ground on the issue. Honestly it’s troubling to me that a community like Jonesboro has such division going on within the community.  This event, while huge and widely successful already, could have potentially been a lot bigger and could have had a wide reaching impact on the economic development and growth of the entire region.  It’s a shame that we will never know.  Gauging the success of Barcamp Jonesboro 2010 I think it’s safe to say that there will be a Barcamp 2011 next year, I sure hope the media jumps on board and helps out…

If you attended the event, I would love to hear from you.  If you would also like to weigh in on the discussion regarding the lack of media representation during the event, please feel free to leave a comment below…

Custom Gowalla Event Stamp!

2767_0931061454738 A few days ago I reached out to Gowalla to see if they would be interested in helping us out with our first ever Toadsuck Tweetup by designing us a custom stamp for Toadsuck Daze.  I got notification today from Sandi that they were in fact interested and that they were going to design the custom stamp for us.  This stamp will be available for people to pick up by checking in on Gowalla during the weekend long event.  Now, I haven’t seen the stamp yet, and I can only imagine that it’s going to have a frog on it since that is the direction that I pointed them in, kind of fitting don’t you think?

Why is this a big deal?  Well, because aside from large, highly publicized events, there just aren’t that many of these custom stamps out there to pick up for Gowalla collectors and enthusiasts, and I am not for sure but this might be the first one in Central Arkansas for an event.  The only way to get this stamp is to check in on Gowalla during the festival weekend, after that it’s gone forever unless of course you picked it up, in which case it’s yours forever!  A great time to do this check in would be during the tweetup we have scheduled for 12 noon on Saturday during the festival.  Stay tuned for more information on the Tweetup later, I just wanted to shout from the rooftops how cool Gowalla is for helping us out with this.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Toadsuck Daze, which is expected to see 150,000 people this year, here’s a little bit of information from the main website:

Toad Suck Daze is a free festival.  A 3-day festival of food, family and fun held on the streets of downtown Conway, Arkansas. This ‘Laid Back Weekend’ occurs annually the first weekend in May and has something for the entire family: arts & crafts, ‘Toadal Kids Zone’, a carnival, local and national entertainment, food, rock wall, petting zoo, ‘Stuck on a Truck’, 5K/10K, golf tournament, a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, magicians, and so much more! Toad Suck Daze is also home to ‘The World Championship Toad Races’. The festival is run almost exclusively by volunteers from Conway and Faulkner County, including the local police and fire departments. It has free admission and proceeds go to support higher education in Faulkner County. Since the start of the festival over $1 million has been given in scholarship and towards scholarship endowments. This money has helped over 200 individuals attend local institutes of higher learning.

If you aren’t familiar with Gowalla, I suggest you check them out immediately if you work in the web industry!  You can find their awesome app in the app store as well as linked from their corporate website: http://www.gowalla.com.  Stay tuned for more info on this stamp as I get it…

Attention: Conway, Arkansas Twitter Community

toadsuck-tweetup The other night my wife and I attended the Little Rock Tweetup, also known as #LRTweetup. We had a blast connecting with people that we talk to on a daily basis inside the social network Twitter. The #LRTweetup was organized several months ago and have had several meetups at various establishments around Little Rock.  They have even helped raise awareness to some very good causes such as Reach out and Read Arkansas and most recently Meet me Halfway, which brought into town Country Music Performer Jimmy Wayne.

The Little Rock Tweetup group meets on a pretty frequent basis if for no other reason than to have a drink and unwind with friends after a busy day.  The calendar can be found online for #LRTweetup if you are interested in attending, it’s a great networking opportunity.  The venues for each Tweetup change from meeting to meeting and from what I can tell the business owners that host these events see an obvious economical impact from having an influx of people converge on their establishments.  To learn some more about the Little Rock Tweetup, click here…

Now, here is my question.  Keith Crawford, one of the organizers of the event and one of my good friends asked me if I thought such a group would go over well in Conway.  I told him that I wasn’t quite for sure if there was enough interest so I thought that I would put out this feeler post to see…

Would you be interested in being a part of the Conway, Arkansas Area Tweetup?
If so, please leave a comment below and let me know…
